Army's Comeback Bid Falls Short Against URI
September 14, 2014 | Women's Soccer
Rhode (6-1-1), ranked 10th in the latest NCAA Mid-Atlantic poll, scored twice within an eleven-minute span in the opening half and made that early lead stand. The Rams took a quick 1-0 lead just 1:17 into the game when Katrin Gylfadottir's shot curled into the upper corner of the Aarmy net. Ten minutes later, Samantha Leyh scored off a deflection of Ari Stanton's cross for a 2-0 lead for what would prove to be the game winner.
Just before Leyh scored, Army's Candace Stewart fired a shot on goal but was denied by keeper Lindsey Reilly. The Black Knights booted five shots to URI's six in the opening half and also trailed in corner kicks, 2-1.
Army (3-5-0) outshot URI 6-3 in the second half with junior Katie Holder booting three of her game-high five shots on goal late in regulation when the Black Knights fired four quick shots at the URI goal trying to notch the equalize. Reilly, finishing with five saves, rejected those attempts to preserve the win.
The one goal that got past Reilly was Katalinic's shot that deflected into the net off Mallory Herron's cross on a free kick in the 67th minute. The assist is the first of the season and career third for Herron after setting up Katalinic's first collegiate goal.
Army goalkeeper Jordan Cassalia posted four saves, two in each half. The Black Knights outshot URI 11-9 with URI holding a slim 3-2 corner kick advantage. Both teams had nine fouls.
The Black Knights return home to prepare for their Patriot League opener Saturday afternoon at 5 p.m. when they take on Bucknell in the first game of a doubleheader with the men, who host St. Francis (N.Y.) at 7:30 p.m.
Army was picked fouth in the Patriot League's preseason poll and Bucknell was sixth.
