Track Begins Outdoor Season at Shamrock Invitational XVIII

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Army track & field teams will participate in their first outdoor competiton of the season beginning Thursday at the 2014 Shamrock Invitational XVII hosted by Coastal Carolina. The three-day event will be held at Dough Shaw Memorial Stadium.
Army is coming off an indoor season that saw the men place third and the women sixth at the Patriot League Championships. Plebe Jose Santana was named the Male Rookie of the Meet after breaking the school record in the 60-meter dash and earning conference titles in the 400-meter dash and the 4x400-meter relay.
The Black Knights return a total of 11 cadets, five men and six women, who put their names among the program's all-time top 10 in their respective events last season. The women's team returns three pole vaulters, Megan Gemar, Laurel Neposchlan and Ashley Zeitvogel, who all cleared top-10 heights in 2013.
Competition begins Thursday morning with the men's hammer throw and the multi-events. The 10,000-meter run will also be contested on Thursday. The 4x400-meter relay will wrap up the meet on Saturday.
Following the Shamrock Invitational, the Black Knights will compete at the Texas Relays on March 27-29 before hosting Navy on April 5. Army will also host the Army 5-Way on April 12. The Patriot League Championships will be held in Annapolis on May 2-3.
