Army Falls To Navy, 1-0, in Double Overtime
November 07, 2014 | Men's Soccer
CHESTER, Pa. - Junior Derek Vogel converted the game-winning goal in the 107th minute to send Navy to a 1-0 double-overtime victory over the Army men's soccer team for the second straight season in a Patriot League match on Friday evening at PPL Park.
Army finishes the regular season 6-7-5 overall and 3-4-2 in the conference, while Navy, which is receiving votes in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) national poll, improves to 11-4-4 and 6-1-2.
The third installment of the Army-Cup drew and Army-Navy men's soccer record of 10,168, which also marked the third highest for college soccer matches in the nation this season.
With the setback, Army will enter next week's Patriot League Tournament as the No. 6 seed and will await tomorrow's conference results to find out its quarterfinal opponent.
Both teams possessed the ball for stretches of the opening half, with Navy holding a slight edge. Army sophomore Alex Jaroscak fired the game's first shot, sending a strike from around 20 yards out just high of the Navy goal in the eighth minute.
Army kept possession in its attacking third early in the half, winning its first corner kick in the 20th minute. Junior Justin Kim sent a left-swinging corner into Navy's 18-yard box, where sophomore Christian Clark directed a header wide of the right post.
Senior Winston Boldt, who finished with two saves, made his only stop of the opening half on a shot from Navy junior Jamie Dubyoski in the 26th minute to keep the score level at 0-0.
The Black Knights came out of the halftime break with a seemingly more attacking-based mindset as they held a 9-3 lead in shots during the stanza to include a 5-1 advantage through the first 20:12 of the period. Junior Alex Clark sent an attempt wide in the 47th minute before senior Sean Mogan had his shot blocked following a corner kick from freshman Marcos Arroyo in the 53rd minute.
Army registered a threatening chance in the 75th minute when Mogan sent a turnaround shot off the left post from about 10 yards out. Mogan's shot glanced off the inside of the woodwork before bouncing across the goal mouth, where Navy junior goalkeeper Jackson Morgan corralled the loose ball.
Army continued make things difficult for the Navy defense as the Black Knights recorded three shots over a 6:27 span between the 76th and 83rd minutes, while holding the Midshipmen without a shot during that stretch. Navy responded with a dangerous scoring opportunity of its own in the 85th minute when Dubyoski received a through ball on the right side of the 18-yard box that Boldt managed to get a piece of and push wide.
The Black Knights controlled a 9-3 advantage in shots during the second half.
Army kept the pressure on heading into the first overtime period, as freshman Mario Da Silva's chance from close range was saved on the right side before the Black Knights won a penalty kick following a hand ball in the box in the 94th minute. Jaroscak lined up for the potential game-winning penalty kick, but was unable to beat a diving Morgan in the lower left corner of the net.
Navy recorded the only shot of the final overtime session.
Army enters next week's Patriot League Tournament as the No. 6 seed. Saturday's conference results will determine Army's quarterfinal opponent, which will be American, Bucknell or Lehigh. The Black Knights will travel to one of those three locations for their Patriot League Quarterfinal game on Tuesday, Nov. 11.
GAME NOTES: Army drops to 27-39-14 all-time versus Navy ... Friday marked the third straight Army-Navy match to extend into the second overtime period ... Army will be the No. 6 seed in next week's Patriot League Tournament.
