Sprint Football Falls to Navy, 27-7
October 31, 2014 | Sprint Football
Senior David Brown collected 11 tackles and had a sack for the Black Knights in the defeat. Sophomore running back Marqus Burrell had the lone touchdown for Army.
Navy quarterback Joe Hampton threw four touchdowns, including two to Colin Butler. The Midshipmen outgained the Black Knights 388-217 overall, led by the league's leading rusher Eric Wellmon.
Wellmon carried the ball 36 times for 131 yards and added a 20-yard reception as well. Hampton was 15-of-26 for 193 yards and Corey Garcia totaled 148 all-purpose yards for Navy.
Senior quarterback J.J. Wartski was 16-of-31 for a season-low 139 yards. After throwing at least three touchdowns in every game leading up to the Star Game, Wartski failed to throw a touchdown pass for the first time all season.
Navy's defense held Army's offense to its lowest point total of the season. The Black Knights averaged over 40 points per game entering Friday night. The Midshipmen tallied three sacks, an interception and pressured Wartski all game long.
After a scoreless first quarter, Navy got on the board first on a 15-yard pass from Hampton to Matthew Hite to start the second quarter. Despite missing the point after attempt, the Midshipmen quickly got the ball back and put the pressure on once again.
Hampton hit Garcia from 38 yards out at the 8:14 mark in the second to put Navy up 13-0. For the first time all season, Army entered halftime without putting any points on the scoreboard. It was also the largest deficit of the season for the Black Knights.
Navy kept rolling into the second half and went ahead, 20-0, on a 10-yard pass from Hampton to Butler with 4:48 left in the third quarter.
Freshman Nathan Lopez made a huge play for the Black Knights on the Mids' next possession, blocking a punt which was picked up by fellow freshman Jacob Marchillo, who returned it 27 yards to the Navy 3-yard line.
Burrell then took a direct snap out of the wildcat formation and pounded his way into the end zone on the second effort from two yards out to cut the deficit to 13 as the third quarter came to a close.
Freshman Taylor Ragland had an interception on Navy's next possession, but Army couldn't capitalize. Navy put the game away with 1:38 left as Hampton threw his fourth touchdown to Butler to seal the deal at 27-7.
Junior Jesse Shackelford had a solid game for Army, racking up 61 rushing yards on 13 carries and a reception for 10 yards as well. Seniors Zachary Woods and Danny Hokanson combined for 9 catches for 69 yards and junior Kevin O'Brien added three catches for 36 yards.
Junior Ryan Gallagher had 11 tackles and senior Tyler Peterson had nine. The Black Knights turned the ball over three times and Navy held a major advantage in time of possession.
The Black Knights finish the season at 6-1 overall and second in the CSFL.
