Army Sweeps Patriot League Dual From Lehigh

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army swimming and diving teams swept Lehigh in a Patriot League dual meet Friday afternoon at Crandall Pool. The Black Knight men cruised to a 196-97 win over the Mountain Hawks and the women recorded a 181-113 decision as both Army teams improved to 1-1 in the conference, while snapping Lehigh’s unbeaten string at two.
Sophomore Chris Szekely had a hand in four wins, touching the wall first in the 50 (21.11), 100 (46.67) and 200 (1:42.27) freestyle events, along with swimming anchor on the opening 400-yard medley relay that combined for a winning time of 3:28:24. Szekelyled an Army sweep of the top three places in the 100 free.
Sophomore Colin Kanzari followed with three victories starting with swimming the second leg on the 400 medley relay, along with sweeping both breaststroke events. He won the shorter 100 in 59.09 and the longer 200 in 2:09.14 as the Black Knights claimed the top three places in all three.
Junior diver Zachary Woods compiled a score of 337.65 to win the 3-meter board after capturing the 1-meter board with a score of 322.20 in dominating the field in both. Sophomore Colin Kanzari led the way in the breaststroke events winning the 100 (59.09) and 200 (2:09.14) as Army swept the top two spots
Having a hand with two wins was sophomore Samuel Mo, who was the leadoff on the 400 medley relay, and led the field in the 100-yard backstroke. Also joining the winner’s circle were juniors Casey Woudenberg and Will Viana in the 1000-yard freestyle (9:41.27) and 200-yard back (1:54.78), respectively. Sean Regan swam the third leg in rounding out Army’s winning 400-yard medley relay that posted a time of 3:28.24
Placing runner-up for the men, who leveled their season mark to 3-3 and 1-1 in the Patriot League, were Joshua Urnezis, on both boards with a 309.07 on the one-meter and 267.67 on the three-meter, Clay Harmon, 1000 free (9:41.56), Adam Sjoholm, 200 free (1:43.8), Ben Quay, 100 breaststroke (59.9), Regan, 200 (1:52.62), and 100 (51.49) fly, Adam Sjoholm
100 free (47.9), Grayson Whitten, 200 breast (2:10.29), and Devin McCall, 500 free (4:41.79)
Army held a 127-40 lead after nine events en route to claiming 12 of 16 after swimming exhibition in the final two as the Black Knights stretched their unbeaten streak over Lehigh to 43-0.
In the women’s meet, freshman Ariana Bullard keyed Army having a hand in four wins. She touched the wall first in the 100 (56.69) and 200 (2:05.17) butterfly events after beating the field in the 200-yard individual medley (2:09.32) and was a member of the 400-yard medley relay as the Black Knights captured eight of the 16 events.
Army captured both relays, clocking in at 1:38.28 in the 200-yard free relay made up of Molly Mucciarone, Grace Hamilton, Rachel Kim and Megan Grier. Grier also swam the anchor leg of the record-breaking 400-yard medley team where she was joined by Kelly Hamilton, Jessica Burkett and Bullard with a time of 400-yard medley relay. The foursome shattered the previous record of 3:57.12 from 2004.
Plebe Danielle Nuszkowski set the tone for individual wins, capturing the gold in the 1,000 free with a time of 10:24.93. Nuszkowski was joined by Kelly Hamilton, junior Kristen Barta, and Bullard in the winner’s circle as they both came out on top in their individual races. Kelly Hamilton posted a time of 58.96 in the 100-yard back while Barta touched the wall at 2:26.98 in the 200 breast.
Freshman Burkett also tallied points for the Black Knights with two second place showings in the 200 breast (1:09.06) and the 200 IM (2:11.07).
Army diving rounded out the meet sweeping both boards. Senior Danielle Ullman took the gold off the 3-meter board with a score of 262.65 followed by fellow seniors Rita Snyder (240.60) and Breawna Davis (238.80). Snyder led the Black Knights off the 1-meter board with a score of 254.62 with Ullman taking the silver (250.80) and Davis taking the bronze (225.67).
The Black Knights close out their home competition on Saturday, Jan. 11, versus Patriot League competitors Bucknell at Crandall Pool. Swimming events will kick off at 1 p.m. with diving starting one hour prior.
