PRINCETON, N.J. - Defending Ivy League champion Princeton (2-0-0) defeated Army (2-3-1), 3-0, in a non-league women's soccer match Sunday afternoon at Roberts Stadium. Lauren Lazo scored just six minutes into the game and Tyler Lussi tallied twice in the Tigers' second straight shutout win of the weekend.
Princeton, a participant at the NCAA Tournament the past eight years, recorded 11 shots, six on goal, tallying twice in the first half and once in the second half en route to posting five goals in its first two games of the season. The Tigers shut out Richmond, 2-0, in their season and home debut Friday night.
Princeton struck just early when Lazo opened the scoring in the 39th minute tallying off Melissa Downey's cross for her second goal of the season. With just over 12 minutes remaining to halftime Lussi capitalized off a double-assist combination of Kacie Kergides and Gabrielle Ragazzo that boosted the Tigers' lead to 2-0.
Tyler recorded her second goal of the game and third of the season off another double-assist combination when she converted Jessie Haley's thru ball in the 58th minute.
Army fired nine shots to 11 by Princeton with all five of the Black Knights attempts in the second half coming over a five-minute span late in the game. Shots by Jaclyn Kalik, Molly McGuigan and Hanna Rozzi were high, while attempts by Candace Stewart and Rica Ndlovu went wide.
Seniors Kimberly An and Joey Molacek each had two attempts on goal, while three players had shots on goal for the Tigers who posted their second win and first since 1995 in the series that Army leads 4-2-0.
The Black Knights close out a challenging five-game road slate Friday when they visit Central Connecticut State before hosting Rhode Island Sunday (Sept. 15) for their first home match since late August.
