Men's Tennis Hits The Ground Running At Fall Tournaments

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army men’s tennis began its fall season in furious fashion this weekend at a pair of tournaments. The Black Knights travels to the Saint Joseph’s Invitational and Yale’s Ivy Plus Invitational, playing a combined 53 matches over the course of the weekend. Army went 9-27 in singles and 6-11 in doubles play in what was its first outing of the 2013-14 season.
Senior Chad Llewellyn had the most successful individual performance, going 2-1 in singles play at SJU. Competing in Flight 4, Llewellyn, who has yet to play a full season at West Point due to injuries, defeated SJU’s Sam Cadwell, 4-6, 6-1, 10-8, to advance to the quarterfinals. Llewellyn then knocked off Danny Talone of Drexel in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, to become the lone Black Knight to advance to the semifinals. Llewellyn’s run to came to an end with a 6-2, 6-1 setback to Villanova’s Luis Miranda.
In doubles play in Philadelphia, freshman Cameron Voigt and sophomore Joey Hatala also advanced to the semifinal round. Competing in the Flight 2 bracket, the Army duo defeated Patriot League foe Mitch Abramo and Brian Stefanowicz of Lafayette, 8-3, before knocking of a pair from the host Hawks, in tie-breaking fashion 8-7 (7). Drexel’s Badr Ouabdelmoumen and Daniel Hansen ended Voigt and Hatala’s run in the semis, 8-3.
In New Haven, a pair of Black Knights recorded main draw singles wins. Senior Asika Isoh, competing at the A Draw, defeated Will Spector of Brown in straight sets, 6-1, 6-5, while freshman Grant Riechmann won his first collegiate match, 6-5, 3-6, 6-2, over Frenk Kote of Binghamton in the D Draw.
This weekend’s tournaments were the first two of seven on the Black Knights’ 2013 fall slate. Up next for Army, selected players will travel to Tulsa, Okla., for the ITA Men’s All-American Championships on Sept. 28-29, before the full squad competes at the West Point Fall Quad opposite Yale, St. Bonaventure and Boston College, Oct. 5-6. Army will then compete at the ITA Regional Championships, Oct. 17-22, before the Lehigh Fall Championships (Oct. 26-27) and the Harvard Halloween Invite (Nov. 1-13).
