WEST POINT, N.Y. – With just the baseball and track & field teams’ NCAA appearances left on the 2012-13 schedule, the Army Black Knights have already clinched the program’s highest winning percentage in eight years. Army’s 25 teams have posted a combined 236-181-8 (.565) record, its highest winning percentage since the 2004-05 season (.582).
Army’s teams combined for a winning record in all three seasons. The fall squads posted a .517 winning percentage, the winter teams won 53.4 percent of their contests and the spring sports are currently winning at a .614 clip. The Black Knights boasted five league championships, four teams that participated in their respective NCAA tournaments and 15 individuals who qualified for NCAA competition.
“This season’s results are a tribute to the hard work and dedication of our cadet-athletes, coaches and staff,” Director of Athletics Boo Corrigan said. “We are committed to winning, and winning the right way. The results have proven we can be successful in the win column and in our mission of developing leaders of character committed to the values of Duty, Honor, Country. Army fans should be proud of what the program has accomplished this season, and we look forward to giving them even more to cheer about in coming years.”
The Black Knights’ winter sports had their best showing in five years. The women’s basketball team led the charge with a 22-8 record, the Patriot League regular-season crown and the program’s first WNIT appearance. The men’s basketball squad scored its first winning season (16-15) in 28 years, while the rifle squad reached the NCAA Championships for the 10th straight year.
Army also held its own in the season series versus arch-rival Navy. The two teams split the season series 16-16-1, marking the best winning percentage against the Mids (.500) since going 17-14-1 in 2004-05. The Black Knights owned a 4-2-1 record against Air Force, giving the program a 20-18-2 (.525) versus their service academy foes in 2012-13.
Individually, Army cadets racked up 15 major awards from their respective conferences, including three league players of the year and three rookies of the year. Kelsey Minato became the first player in Patriot League history to be named both the Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year in the same season. The team became the first Patriot League squad to sweep the awards when Anna Simmers was named Defensive Player of the Year and Dave Magarity captured Coach of the Year honors.
Magarity was one of four Army mentors to claim Patriot League Coach of the Year accolades, including Zach Spiker (men’s basketball), Paul Peck (women’s tennis) and Mickey Wender (men’s swimming & diving).
Army athletes also excelled in the classroom, claiming six conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year honorees.
