WEST POINT, N.Y. - Canisius broke a 2-2 tie with a pair of goals and beat Army, 4-2, Friday night in an Atlantic Hockey Association contest at Tate Rink.
The Golden Griffins led 1-0 before the Black Knights rattled off two straight goals to take a brief lead. Canisius then closed the scoring with the final three goals of the game to snap a five-game losing streak.
Army hosted a "House of Blues," on Friday with special uniforms, t-shirt and bracelet giveaways to raise Prostate Cancer Awareness. A ceremonial faceoff was also part of the festivities.
Mike Henderson and Andy Starczewski scored goals for the Black Knights while Danny Colvin, Marcel Alvarez and Kyle Maggard posted assists. Army goalie Rob Tadazak made 23 saves.
Canisius improved to 5-11-34 overall and 5-5-2 in league games while Army fell to 2-10-6 overall and 1-8-4 against AHA foes.
Canisius opened the scoring eight minutes into the contest when Torrey Lindsay tapped in his fourth goal of the season.
Army knotted the game seven minutes later when Henderson knocked home his fourth goal of the season. Maggard shot wide and chased down the loose puck for his first assist of the season.
Less than a minute later, Army led 2-1 on Starczewski's team-leading seventh goal of the season. With a Canisius player serving a minor penalty for interference, he converted his third power play goal of the season. Alvarez collected his seventh assist this season and Colvin his sixth.
The lead was short-lived, 42 seconds in fact, before Canisius tied the game on Patrick Sullivan's second goal of the season, capping a wild first period with the score knotted at 2.
Canisius took its second lead of the game midway through the second period as Tyler Wiseman recorded his second goal of the season, the only scoring in the period despite Army holding a 10-9 advantage in shots on goal.
The Golden Griffins closed the scoring 11 minutes into the final period on Ben Danford's second goal of the season.
Army rattled off 15 shots on goal and pulled Tadazak with 90 seconds left but was unable to get any closer.
Army and Canisius will conclude the season series Saturday at 7:05 p.m. A sold out crowd is anticipated. Following the game, fans will be allowed on the Tate Rink surface to skate with the players.
