WEST POINT, N.Y. - Despite a 36-23 advantage in shots on goal, Army fell to Canisius, 2-1, Saturday in an Atlantic Hockey Association game at a sold-out Tate Rink.
Army drew a season-best 2,631 fans and recorded double-digit shots in the first and third periods but fell to 2-11-6 overall and 1-9-4 in league games.
Canisius broke a 1-1 tie seven minutes into the final period and withheld a furious Army rally to sweep the weekend series and improve to 6-11-3 overall and 6-5-2 in the AHA.
Andy Starczewski scored for the Black Knights to tie the game in the third period with assists from Danny Colvin and Mike Hull.
Army goalie Ryan Leets made 21 saves while Canisius’ Dan Morris turned away 35 shots.
The Black Knights wore black sweaters at home and posted 15 shots in the first, nine in the second and 12 in the final period but were unable to top the Golden Griffins.
A day after a 4-2 loss to Canisus, Army came out firing with a 15-8 advantage in shots on goal in the first stanza. The Golden Griffins, however, netted the first goal on Doug Jessey’s tally two minutes into the contest.
Army had three power play opportunities in the first and two in the second period but was held off the scoreboard, despite a 24-18 advantage in shots on goal through two periods.
The Black Knights were finally rewarded in the third period and knotted the game at 1-1 five minutes into the stanza. Starczewski scored his second goal in as many games and added to his team-best scoring with his eighth goal and 12th point of the season. Colvin, who missed four games around the holidays with an upper body injury, also had a point for the second straight game and picked up his seventh assist of the season. Hull posted sixth assist of the season.
The lead was short-lived though as Canisius scored the game-winning tally two minutes later. Scott Moser was credited with the tally.
Army had a power play opportunity and then a two-man advantage with a Canisius penalty and the goalie pulled but could not solve Morrison.
Army will travel to upstate New York to play Niagara in a two-game series next weekend. Both games on Friday and Saturday are set for 7:05 p.m. at Dwyer Arena.
