WEST POINT, N.Y. - Mark Dube scored a short-handed goal with just under five minutes remaining in regulation to help Army to a 3-3 overtime tie with Air Force, Friday night in an Atlantic Hockey Association contest at a sold-out Tate Rink.
Air Force took a 3-2 lead four minutes into the final period before Dube’s tally knotted the game. The five-minute sudden victory overtime didn’t yield another goal and the service academy rivals played to just the second tie at Tate Rink.
A crowd of 2,535 turned out at Tate Rink and were treated to a physical contest, two goals in every period and in the end, a tie.
Bryant Skarda and Danny Colvin also scored for Army while Bill Day, John Clark, Maurice Alvarez, Andy Starczewski and Mike Hull were credited with assists. Goalie Ryan Leets made 27 saves as Army moved to 2-13-7 overall and 1-11-5 in league games.
Twice, Air Force rallied from one-goal deficits and is now 10-7-5 overall and 8-4-4 in league games.
Army improved to 5-0-2 in its last seven games against Air Force at Tate Rink and 7-1-2 in its last nine at its home ice.
Skarda opened the scoring, netting his second goal of the season. Clark started the play when he chipped the puck into the Air Force zone. Day battled to secure the puck and hit Skarda with a long pass. Skarda blasted in a shot from outside the face-off circle as Day collected his second assist of the season and Clark his first.
Air Force knotted the game seven minutes later when Tim Kirby scored a power play goal.
The Black Knights went back on top in the second period with a power play score of their own. Starczewski passed to Maurice Alvarez near the blue and Colvin tipped in the long shot from Alvarez. It was Colvin’s second goal and the fifth assist for both Starczewski and Alvarez.
The Falcons again forced a deadlock when John Kruse scored 46 seconds later to silence the crowd.
Air Force took its first lead of the game when Paul Weisgarber was credited with his third goal of the season 4:37 into the final period.
Army continued to apply offensive pressure and was rewarded with a short-handed goal, its second of the season. Hull made a great play in the Army end and fed Dube. Dube skated in and fired high, just under the crossbar for his third goal of the season. It marked Hull’s eight assist of the season.
Both teams had opportunities in the final minutes of regulation and overtime but Leets and Air Force goalie Stephen Caple (18 saves) came up big to preserve the tie.
Army and Air Force will conclude the regular season series Saturday at 7:05 p.m. at Tate Rink. The game is sold out.
