WEST POINT, N.Y. - Air Force scored a goal in each period and beat Army, 4-2, Saturday night in an Atlantic Hockey Association contest at a sold out Tate Rink.
Kyle Maggard scored twice for Army and goalie Rob Tadazak made 24 saves but a strong defensive effort by the Falcons was the difference.
Air Force improved to 11-7-5 overall and 9-4-4 in league games while Army is now 2-14-7 overall and 1-12-6 in league games.
After a 3-3 overtime draw on Friday night, Army’s third sell-out crowd of the season was on hand for the second game of the regular-season series and saw Air Force win for the first time in its last eight games at Tate Rink.
Maggard netted his second and third goals of the season while Bryant Skarda registered a pair of assists. Bill Day and Cody Ikkala also had assists.
Air Force struck first, scoring the game’s first goal 3:23 into the contest as John Kruse converted a Tim Kirby pass. The Falcons had 10 more shots on goal and a power play opportunity but Tadazak kept it a 1-0 game after 20 minutes.
The Falcons extended their advantage to 2-0 late in the second period. Paul Weisgarber netted his fourth goal of the season off an assist from Cole Gunner.
Air Force had 11 shots in the first period and eight in the second while limiting Army to six shots through two periods.
Army had a five-minute power play but a sprawling Air Force defense and key saves from goalie Jason Torf kept it a 2-0 game after 40 minutes.
The Black Knights got on the scoreboard less than three minutes into the final period. Day drove the net and got off a shot and Maggard battled to pound in the rebound to cut the deficit to one goal. Skarda started the play with a pass to Day.
The Falcons again took a two-goal lead when Jason Fabian scored his fourth goal of the season four minutes later.
Fabian picked up his second goal, an empty net tally, with 25 seconds remaining.
Maggard capped the scoring, his second of the game, on the power play. Skarda registered his second assist after Ikkala started the play.
Army totaled 12 shots in the final period but suffered the loss.
Army will play a home-and-home series with Bentley next weekend. A limited number of tickets remain for Friday’s game at Tate Rink at 7:05 p.m. while the series shifts to Waltham, Mass., Saturday.
