WEST POINT, N.Y. - Freshman right-hander Haley Pypes scattered five hits and nipped a late rally by Marist as Army held on for a 5-3 victory over the Red Foxes in the first game of a non-league softball doubleheader at the Army Softball Complex Tuesday afternoon. Marist employed an 11-hit attack to earn a split in an 11-1 nightcap decision with the Black Knights averting the shutout on Rachael Duval's two-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Trailing 3-0 going into the bottom of the first inning in the opener, Army (24-22) scored five times on two hits along with benefitting from three errors and a walk off starter Emily Osterhaus (11-7). With one out, Army loaded the bases on a walk, infield error and fielder's choice. Amanda Nguyen's bunt single delivered Pypes for the first run of the game with Reanna Johnson scoring on an error by the left fielder. Alex Reynolds' fielder's choice RBI knocked in Meghan McGowan for the third run with Alexis AuBuchon closing out the inning with a two-run single to left field as all nine batters come to the plate in that inning.
Osterhaus, touched for all five of her hits in the first two innings, stranded a pair of runners in the third inning and went on to retire the final 10 batters she faced.
After being touched for three runs in the second inning, Pypes scattered three hits over the next fiving innings while working her way out of trouble in the sixth inning. After giving up a leadoff double to Aly Klemmer, Pypes got the next batter to fly out to center field followed by a strikeout before yielding her second hit of the inning and last of the game. The freshman hurler from Kansas City, Mo., got out safely on a foul ball to left field in recording her 12th win to break into Army's top 10 all-time single-season list in earning a share of that spot with Shaun Evans (2001).
In the nightcap, Marist capitalized on four hits to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning with Army threatening in the home half after loading the bases on a single and back-to-back walks with one out. Paige Lewis (14-6), who scattered seven hits, struck out seven and walked three batters, got out of that jam on a strikeout and infield popup as she went on to retire seven of the next eight batters.
Lewis worked her way out of trouble again in the fourth inning with runners in scoring position and one out on a groundout and strikeout ust before her team padded its lead to 7-0 following a five-run fifth. The Red Foxes then turned the game into a rout with four more runs in the seventh, then lost out on the shutout in the home half of that inning. Reynolds, who was 2-for-3, ripped a one-out double to right center field. Following a strikeout, Reynolds scored on Duval's lone hit in the game off Lewis that she sent into left field.
Ortenzo, Reynolds and McGowan stroked a pair of hits with Ortenzo and McGowan each going 3-for-7 with a run scored in the twinbill.
