WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army men's tennis team earned a pair of much-needed wins on Sunday at Lichtenberg Tennis Center on the campus of West Point. The Black Knights defeated Hofstra, 7-0, before topping Monmouth, 5-2. With the wins, Army halted its seven-match losing streak and improved to 3-7 this season.
Freshman Asika Isoh powered through an undefeated weekend, winning all three of his singles matches at No. 1, including two Sunday afternoon. Isoh defeated Hofstra's Chris Damion, 6-0, 6-1, to open the day, followed by a 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over Monmouth's Laurence Heads. The Cambria Heights, N.Y. native improved to 6-5 this spring and 11-11 overall, with both win totals leading the Black Knights.
Senior Tripp Johnson earned his sixth and seventh victories of the year on Sunday, to rank second on Army. Johnson defeated the Pride's Antonio Pena, 6-2, 6-4, followed by David Sherwood of the Hawks, 6-3, 6-4. With both matches at No. 2, the senior improved to 4-4 at that slot this year.
Johnson also aided in the Black Knights' double point against the Pride, pairing with freshman Rommel Verano at No. 1. The duo defeated Chris Damion and Antonio Pena, 8-3, for their first win of the season (1-3).
Junior Andrew Clark and sophomore Alex Holland teamed at No. 2 doubles against Hofstra, defeating Ben Thompson-Star and Jon Disley, 8-4, to clinch the doubles point. Clark followed with his first singles win of the season, defeating Adrien Bailly, 6-3, 4-7, 10-7, at No. 6.
The win over Monmouth marked Army's 12th consecutive victory over the Hawks, making the Black Knights a perfect 12-0 against their regional opponent. Against Hofstra, Army improved to 6-1 all-time against the Pride, winning the last two meetings by clean sweeps (7-0).
The Black Knights return to their home courts on Friday, March 4 when they host their final nonconference tune-up against NJIT at 3 p.m. Army will then take to the road for its Patriot League-opening match against Colgate on Sunday, March 6.
