COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Brandon Padula belted a first-inning home run and David Carroll fired 7.1 innings of five-hit ball to lead Maryland to a 3-0 victory over Army on Saturday afternoon in the middle game of a three-game weekend series at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium.
Maryland (4-3) scored a pair of runs in the first inning with just one hit. Alfredo Rodriguez walked to lead off the frame, and he was advanced to second base on Korey Wacker's sacrifice bunt. Rodriguez moved to third on a wild pitch and he plated the Terrapins' first run on an RBI groundout by Tomo Delp. Padula followed by hitting a solo home run to left field to give Maryland a 2-0 advantage.
The early run support was more than enough for Carroll (2-0), who struck out four and only issued two walks during his outing. Michael Boyden got the final five outs for Maryland to record the save. He allowed one hit and one walk, while striking out three.
Army starter Logan Lee (1-1) settled down after the first inning and did not allow another runner reach third base until the fifth inning, when Maryland pushed across an unearned run. Rodriguez hit a one-out single and advanced to third base when Lee's pickoff attempt went wide. Wacker then singled down the right field line to deliver Rodriguez from third base with an insurance run.
Lee gave up three runs (two earned) on five hits in 5.0 innings. He recorded three strikeouts and yielded three walks. Andy Seaman entered the game in the sixth and fired three scoreless innings of relief. He struck out five and did not issue a walk, while allowing three hits.
"We received solid pitching after the first inning from Logan Lee," said Army head coach Joe Sottolano. "He was able to settle down and give us a quality start. I thought Andy Seaman did a very nice job out of the bullpen.
"Offensively, we struggled today, but I'm not too concerned about that," added Sottolano. "We have a lot of very talented hitters up and down our lineup, and I'm confident that we will make the proper adjustments and do a better job moving forward. We are taking steps in the right direction, and I believe that we will be a dangerous team once we come together."
Shaun Wixted led Army (1-5) at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double. Joey Henshaw banged out a pair of singles for the Black Knights, who were limited to just six hits in the contest.
Wacker went 3-for-3 to lead Maryland's eight-hit attack.
