COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Eric Potter allowed one run on four hits over 7.1 innings as Maryland defeated Army, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium, completing a three-game sweep of the teams' weekend series.
Charlie White went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Maryland, which banged out 11 singles in the contest. J.T. Watkins went 2-for-4 with an RBI to pace Army's five-hit attack.
Potter (1-0) struck out six and walked two during his outing. Creighton Hoke got one out in the eighth inning, and Chuck Ghysels picked up the save after recording the final four outs.
Army starting pitcher Chris Rowley (0-1) threw four scoreless innings before yielding single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. The sophomore scattered nine hits over 5.1 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) with four strikeouts and no walks. Kirk Porter came on in relief of Rowley and yielded one run on two hits in 2.2 innings. He struck out three and issued one walk.
Army (1-6) took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on Watkins' RBI single. Kevin McKague led off the frame with a double, moved to third base on Joey Henshaw's fielder's choice groundout and scored when Watkins singled to right center field.
Maryland (5-3) tied the score at 1-1 in the fifth inning by plating an unearned run. Jack Cleary led off the inning with a single and he moved to third base after an Army throwing error on Alfredo Rodriguez' ground ball allowed the Terrapins to put two men in scoring position with no outs. Rowley got Korey Wacker to pop out to shortstop for the first out of the inning, but Tomo Delp hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring Cleary to the plate with the tying run. Rowley averted further damage by retiring Brandon Padula to end the inning.
Maryland moved in front, 2-1, in the sixth inning as Jake Stinnett reached first base on a fielder's choice, stole second and scored on Curtis Lazar's single. White followed with a single up the middle, chasing Rowley from the game. Porter came out of Army's bullpen and retired Cleary and Rodriguez to get out of the inning.
The Terrapins added an insurance run in the seventh inning as Delp singled with one out, moved to second base on a wild pitch, was advanced to third following a walk and hit batter and scored on Stinnett's groundout. Porter fanned Lazar with runners on second and third to avoid any additional damage.
Army's best late-inning scoring threat came in the eighth, when the Black Knights loaded the bases with two outs thanks to a walk and two hit batters. Ghysels came out of the bullpen to strike out Henshaw to end the threat.
Army put runners on first and second in the ninth inning, but the Black Knights were unable to cash in.
Army returns to action next weekend (March 4-6) when the Black Knights travel to Forrest City, N.C., for games against Ohio State, Akron and Western Carolina.
