TEAM
The Black Knights played their home opener versus Hawai’i. Army has now lost three straight home debuts.
Saturday’s attendance of 30,042 marked the largest crowd for a Michie Stadium opener since 31,357 fans watched Army take on Baylor on Sept. 17, 2005.
The loss kept the Black Knights from their first 2-0 start since the 1996 season. Army has started the last two seasons 1-0, the first time it has won consecutive season openers since 1995 and 1996.
In both of Army’s first two games, the winning points have been scored with less than 40 seconds left. Scott Enos’ game-winning 31-yard field goal with seven seconds remaining followed Army’s game-winning touchdown run by Jared Hassin with 38 seconds left the previous week at Eastern Michigan.
The Black Knights dropped to 0-2 all-time versus the Warriors. It was Hawaii’s first trip to Michie Stadium and their first venture into New York State.
Army scored 14 points off two Hawai’i fumbles and has now scored 31 points off five takeaways through the first two games.
The Black Knights’ 28 points were their most in a loss since a 38-31 defeat at Rice on Nov. 8, 2008.
OFFENSE
Army has scored on both of its possession to start the third quarter this season.
The Black Knights scored three touchdowns in the third quarter against Hawai’i, matching its season total from last year.
Army’s 21 points in the third quarter represented its highest-scoring period since a 21-point fourth quarter in a 44-13 win at Tulane on Oct. 4, 2008.
Army has posted 28 points in consecutive games for the first time since a three-game stretch in 2004.
The Black Knights ran for four touchdowns for the second straight week. Army is now 8-3 in games when it scores four times via the rush since 2000.
Sophomore FB Jared Hassin led the team with a career-high 83 yards. He scored a touchdown for the second straight game and is now just one shy of matching last year’s team leader, Trent Steelman. Hassin’s 20 carries were also a career high.
Sophomore SB Malcolm Brown scored the first two touchdowns of his career, a four-yard run in the second quarter and a one-yard run to tie the game at 21-21 in the third quarter.
Junior QB Max Jenkins took the first snaps of his career after starter Trent Steelman went out with a shoulder injury. Jenkins recorded a one-yard scoring run on his first play from scrimmage. He finished the game with 29 yards on 10 carries and completed one of his two passes for 20 yards.
Junior WR Davyd Brooks caught a career-high three passes. He had a total of two career catches entering the game.
DEFENSE
Senior DE Josh McNary recorded three sacks, just one off his Academy-record set last season at Temple. McNary is Army’s all-time sacks leader with 21 in his four seasons.
Senior DE Marcus Hilton recovered the first fumble of his career. His 10-yard return set up Army’s touchdown that put the Black Knights ahead 28-21 in the third quarter.
Army’s defense allowed only 10 rushing yards on 11 attempts. It marked the first time the Black Knights held a team to 10-or-fewer yards on the ground since limiting Colgate to -8 rushing yards on Nov. 18, 1989. It was the first time since Division I was split into Football Bowl Subdivision and Football Championship Subdivision in 1978 that Army held an FBS team to 10 yards or less on the ground.
