A three-sport athlete at the Academy, John Boretti won the Army Athletic Association trophy in 1967 after earning nine varsity letters during his decorated career. He was a three-time letterwinner at forward for Joe Palone's men's soccer teams (1964-66) and helped Army reach the semifinals of the NCAA Soccer Tournament during each of his three seasons on the "pitch."

Army compiled a 12-1-1 mark during Boretti's sophomore year in 1965, establishing the school record for winning percentage. Boretti was a part of the 1966 Army team that ranks as the highest-scoring soccer squad in Academy history with 70 goals. During those two seasons, Boretti combined for 24 goals and six assists.

Boretti was equally as effective on the baseball diamond as a three-year letterwinner in the Black Knights' outfield (1965-67). A two-time first team All-Eastern Intercollegiate Baseball League selection (1966, 1967), he is one of just six Army players to earn first team All-EIBL honors in successive seasons. Boretti, who served as team captain during his senior season, posted a career-best .304 batting average as a junior and registered a .281 average at the plate during his career.

Boretti also lettered three times as a defenseman for Jack Riley's hockey club from 1965 to 1967. He appeared in 75 career games and posted seven goals and 20 assists for 27 points.
