Zachary Nunez joins the Army West Point men's gymnastics program as an assistant coach, bringing a background as a decorated NCAA Division I gymnast and team captain along with hands-on coaching experience at the youth and collegiate levels.
Nunez arrives at West Point after serving as an assistant coach at the Bart Conner Academy in Norman, Okla., where he coached recreational and competitive boys' gymnasts from beginner through optional levels. He led daily practices with an emphasis on skill development, technique and safety, while providing hands-on spotting and technical instruction across all events. Nunez also worked directly with athletes, parents and coaching staff to track development and progress, and assisted with meets, clinics and special events throughout the year.
Prior to that, Nunez served as a recreation coach for the OU Developmental Gymnastics Clinic, instructing athletes ages 12-18 in gymnastics fundamentals and event-specific skills while designing skill progressions in a structured, safety-first environment.
Nunez's coaching background is rooted in a standout collegiate career at the University of Oklahoma, where he competed as a Division I gymnast from 2020-25 and earned three-time NCAA All-American honors at the national and international levels. During his time with the Sooners, he partnered closely with the team's sports psychologist to strengthen mental preparation and team performance, and mentored incoming athletes as they adjusted to the demands of elite competition and university life.
In his final season, Nunez was named team captain of OU men's gymnastics, helping lead the Sooners to the 2025 MPSF Conference Championship. As captain, he provided emotional and physical support to his teammates, held peers accountable to team values, and served as a liaison between athletes and coaches to foster a positive training culture.
Nunez has also been active in his community throughout his time in Norman, volunteering weekly as a youth mentor at Cleveland Elementary School from 2020-25, where he built relationships with students, supported teachers at school events, and spoke to students about sportsmanship, discipline and leadership. He also volunteered with Food & Shelter Inc., assisting with community meal distribution efforts.
Nunez graduated from the University of Oklahoma in May 2025 with a degree in Psychology.
