Rick Lewis enters his sixth season with the Army West Point Men's Lacrosse team and second as offensive coordinator. He previously held the title of assistant coach (2024-25) and volunteer assistant (2019-20) with the Black Knights.
The Black Knights put on a show in their 2026 season, tallying a 13-4 record to tie for the most wins in a single season in program history en route to claiming the 2026 Patriot League Men’s Lacrosse Championship and earning their 17th Patriot League Regular Season title. The Black Knights returned to the NCAA Tournament in 2026 as Army traveled to University Park to take on Penn State in the first round. Army delivered commanding performances throughout the season including in the 2026 Star Game where the Black Knights delivered a thrilling 14-9 win in front of a crowd of over 15,000 – the highest attendance at a regular season college lacrosse game in 2026 – to claim their 40th victory over the Mids. Army saw Sean Byrne earn the Ensign C. Markland Kelly Jr. Award Turnbull Award, Evan Plunkett earn the first LT J.G. Donald MacLaughlin Award in program history, five USILA All-Americans, four Inside Lacrosse All-Americans, and four USA Lacrosse All-Americans. Byrne, Plunkett, and John Sullivan earned Patriot League major awards with six Black Knights claiming spots on the 2026 All-Patriot League teams. Army's squad put in hard work both on and off the field as the Black Knights saw several members recognized for academic success, highlighted by Gunnar Fellows’ Academic All-Patriot League Team and Drew Miller’s College Sport Communicators Academic All-District Team.
In 2025, Lewis oversaw the man-up unit that ranked in the top 15 in the nation in scoring. He also led goaltender Sean Byrne, who ranked second-best in the nation with a .607 save percentage and finished with a 7.5 goals-against average to be named Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year and Third-Team All-American. The junior led the Patriot League and NCAA Division I in goals-against average and save percentage through the regular season, while ranking first among active career leaders with an 8.15 GAA. Byrne posted a 7.34 GAA and .603 save percentage in League play, helping him earn three Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week honors this season and six in his career.
Lewis returned to the banks of the Hudson in the summer of 2023 after a three-year stint (2021-23) at his alma mater, Ohio State, where he served as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator for the Buckeyes. During his time in Columbus, he also served as the academic liaison and helped the student athletes set a program record for performance in the classroom.
He coached and helped developed multiple All-Americans while in Columbus, including Jack Myers (Second Team), Ryan Terefenko (Second Team) and Jackson Reid (Third Team). Lewis also coached and developed PLL Draft selections in each of his three seasons with the Buckeyes, including Ryan Terefenko and Tre LeClaire (2021), Jackson Reid (2022), and Jack Myers (2023).
In 2022, the Buckeyes scored a program record 14.1 goals per game under his leadership, which was ranked eighth best in the nation. He helped lead the Buckeyes to their first NCAA tournament appearance since 2017.
In his first coaching stint with Army as a volunteer assistant coach, Lewis took over the faceoff group as well as the goaltenders. In 2020, he led goalie Wyatt Schupler to third-team All-American recognition.
Lewis came to West Point after coaching high school and club lacrosse in his home state of Georgia. He played an integral role in developing the sport of lacrosse in his home state and was inducted into the Georgia Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2024.
As the offensive coordinator for the Lambert High School boys’ lacrosse team in 2018, Lewis helped lead the Longhorns to their fourth state championship in nine years. The team finished with a record of 22-0 that season. Lewis was voted the GHSA Assistant Coach of the Year for this feat.
Lewis was a captain for the 2015 Ohio State Buckeyes Men's Lacrosse team where he was a midfielder, appearing in 43 games in his four-year career. Lewis was voted an NCSA Strength and Conditioning All-American his senior season and was selected to play in the USILA North-South Senior All-Star Game upon graduation.
Lewis was drafted in the 2015 National Lacrosse League Draft by the Georgia Swarm. He was also drafted in the Major League Lacrosse Draft after graduation by the Atlanta Blaze.
A native of Atlanta, Ga., Lewis now resides in Montvale, N.J. with his wife, Maddi.
