Jordan Smith joined the Army West Point track and field staff in June 2024 and serves as an assistant coach overseeing the long jump, triple jump and high jump. Since his arrival, Smith’s athletes have earned Patriot League titles, advanced to NCAA postseason competition and established program and Army–Navy Star Meet records.
Smith came to West Point following three seasons at Alvernia University, where he served as the associate head coach for one year before spending two years as the head coach of track and field and cross country.
2025–26 Season
Smith expanded his responsibilities during the 2025–26 season, adding the high jump to his event group. His athletes helped Army capture the women’s outdoor Star Meet and a second consecutive women’s outdoor Patriot League championship while producing five new entries on the program’s all-time top-10 lists.
Bret Wingard won the Patriot League indoor triple jump title with a mark of 15.25m, moving into fourth place in program history. He added a silver medal at the outdoor conference championship and led a men’s triple jump squad that ranked as high as No. 5 nationally in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) indoor Event Squad rankings.
Erin Allert climbed to second in program history in the indoor triple jump and third outdoors. Her 12.71m performance at the outdoor Star Meet qualified her for the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round. Allert also earned bronze medals in the triple jump at both the indoor and outdoor Patriot League championships.
Joyce Philippe earned outdoor conference bronze in the long jump with a mark of 5.85m, placing her seventh in program history. Caleb Smith tied for ninth on Army’s all-time outdoor long jump list, while Thai Douglas earned silver in the high jump at the outdoor conference championships with a clearance of 1.66m. Carlos Posey also earned himself two bronze medals (long jump, high jump) at the indoor conference championships on his way to scoring 15 total points.
2024–25 Season
In his first season at West Point, Smith guided Army’s horizontal jumpers to five Patriot League medals, 14 entries on the program’s all-time top-10 lists and seven of eight possible event victories across the indoor and outdoor Army–Navy Star Meets. His athletes also contributed to Army’s first women’s outdoor Patriot League team championship in 16 years.
The men’s triple jump squad ranked among the nation’s top 10 throughout both seasons, reaching No. 5 indoors and No. 3 outdoors in the USTFCCCA Event Squad Rankings. The group held its No. 3 outdoor ranking for three consecutive weeks and finished the outdoor season as the Northeast Region’s top-ranked triple jump squad.
Army’s horizontal jumpers outscored Navy by a combined 24 points across the two Star Meets. At the outdoor meet, Kalliauna Powers set both the Army program record and the Star Meet record in the women’s long jump with a personal-best mark of 6.01m.
Javan Guevara-Cragwell established a men’s triple jump Star Meet record with a personal-best performance of 15.18m. He later won the Patriot League outdoor title with another personal-best jump of 15.37m, securing the championship by one centimeter on the final attempt and qualifying for the NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round. His jump of 15.37m ranks third all-time.
James Beckett added a runner-up finish in the outdoor Star Meet triple jump with a personal-best mark of 15.01m, qualifying him for the USATF U20 Championships.
Carlos Posey also moved his way up the all-time top-10 lists in the indoor and outdoor long jump. Posey achieved third indoors and second outdoors with jumps of 7.46m. He earned a silver medal in the long jump at the indoor conference championships.
Prior to Army West Point
During Smith’s three seasons at Alvernia, the Golden Wolves established 86 program records—80 in track and field and 6 in cross country—and recorded 10 NCAA Division III national qualifying performances. His tenure also produced five All-America honors, 26 All-Region selections, 11 Middle Atlantic Conference champions, and 38 All-Conference performances.
Alvernia athletes set 4 MAC overall records and 3 MAC championship records under Smith’s leadership. At the All-Atlantic Region Track and Field Conference Championships, the program recorded 62 qualifying performances, 3 event champions, and 8 top-three finishes.
Smith also helped guide Elisabeth Schwarz to a 2022 MAC Outdoor Track & Field Rookie of the Year honor. Schwarz won the conference title as a member of the 4x100-meter relay, finished second in both the 100 and 200 meters, and contributed to a seventh-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay.
Among Smith’s most accomplished athletes at Alvernia was Shinelle Felix, who became the most decorated athlete in program history. Felix earned 5 NCAA Division III All-America honors, including 4 first-team selections, with national finishes of 2nd, 3rd, 3rd, and 6th, along with a second-team honor for a 12th-place finish.
At Bucknell’s Bison Open and Multi, Felix broke a 25-year-old facility record in the indoor triple jump with a mark of 12.67m. The performance also established program and MAC overall records and tied her for 5th on the NCAA Division III all-time performer list. That season, she finished 2nd at the indoor national championships and 3rd outdoors. Her outdoor national championship mark of 12.60m placed her 10th on the Division III all-time performer list.
Before Alvernia, Smith served as a graduate assistant coach at Regis College in Weston, Massachusetts, overseeing the throwing events and assisting with the combined events. During his first indoor season, Cole Anderson set the program’s weight throw record with a mark of 15.31m at the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championships. Smith’s throwers scored 27 points at the conference championship before the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted the remainder of the season. He was named interim head coach of track and field and cross country for the 2020–21 academic year.
Collegiate Career
Smith competed in track and field and soccer at Utica from 2015 to 2019. A combined-events athlete, he trained and competed in the heptathlon and decathlon while also excelling in the javelin.
Smith broke Utica’s javelin record as a freshman and became the program’s first NCAA qualifier in the event when he advanced to the 2019 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. His collegiate career also included top-10 program performances in the javelin, 60m hurdles, 110m hurdles, 400m hurdles, heptathlon, and decathlon.
A team captain, Smith helped Utica win consecutive conference championships in 2016 and 2017, including the first conference title in program history in 2016.
Smith earned a Bachelor of Science in health studies from Utica, and a Master of Science in health administration from Regis College.
