- Title:
- Head Football Strength and Conditioning Coach
Conor Hughes enters his 10th overall season at Army West Point and his seventh as the Head Football Strength and Conditioning Coach, a role he assumed in the spring of 2019 after serving two years as an assistant (2017–18).
During the 2025 offseason, offensive lineman Paolo Gennarelli set a new bench press record by lifting 505 pounds, while defensive lineman Javon Smith broke the squat record with a lift of 635 pounds.
In 2023, Hughes played a key role in the offensive line's significant weight gains as Army transitioned to a new offensive scheme. Eight of the top 10 returning offensive linemen gained 20 pounds or more from the previous season. While only one offensive lineman weighed over 300 pounds in 2022, that number increased to 11 in 2023.
Hughes joined Army West Point after spending six seasons at the University at Albany, where he served as the Director of Football and Men’s Basketball Strength and Conditioning. He led the physical development of the 2011 and 2012 NEC Championship football teams and the 2013, 2014, and 2015 America East champion men’s basketball teams.
Prior to his time at Albany, Hughes served as Head Strength and Conditioning Coach at Iona College in 2010, overseeing all aspects of training for the school’s 21 Division I sports. Earlier that year, he had returned to Albany as an assistant strength and conditioning coach, working with women’s basketball, women’s soccer, men’s soccer, and track and field.
A four-year member of the Springfield College football team, Hughes graduated in 2008 with a degree in Applied Exercise Science. He then interned with the football strength and conditioning staff at Georgia Southern before returning to Albany as a graduate assistant from 2008 to 2009, earning his master’s degree in Liberal Studies in 2010.
Hughes and his wife, Bridget, reside in West Point, N.Y., with their daughter, Ruby.
