Charlotte Sofield joined the women's lacrosse staff at Army in August 2023 as an assistant coach and enters her fourth season at West Point.
In 2026, the Black Knights captured their first Patriot League Regular Season Championship, finished with a 15–5 overall record and an 8–1 conference record, and rose as high as No. 13 nationally in both the USA Lacrosse and IWLCA polls. In one of the most significant accomplishments in modern Patriot League history, Army ended Loyola Maryland’s unprecedented 95–0 undefeated regular-season conference streak, a run that had remained unbroken since the Greyhounds joined the league in 2014. This victory, combined with a top-five national win over No. 5/7 Yale, established Army as one of the nation’s most ascendant and competitive programs.
The Black Knights ranked among the nation’s elite in multiple categories, including 15.3 goals per game, which placed them fourth nationally, and a top-15 net efficiency rating that reflected their balanced dominance on both ends of the field. They also posted a top-20 scoring margin and competed against a top-20 strength of schedule, underscoring their ability to excel against high-level opponents.
The program, in 2026, secured its first NCAA Tournament victory with a commanding 20–8 win over Fairfield and advanced to the NCAA Second Round, marking another historic milestone. Army produced a program-record seven All-Patriot League selections, three All-Region honorees, multiple USA Lacrosse All-Americans, and two IWLCA First Team All-Americans. Most notably, Brigid Duffy became the program’s first-ever Tewaaraton Finalist and the first Army West Point Honda Award Finalist since 1989–90, marking one of the most significant national honors earned by any female cadet-athlete in more than three decades.
The 2025 season saw the program reach new heights, earning another at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament with an 8-1 record in Patriot League play and 13-2 mark in the regular season. Army defeated its first-ever opponent ranked in the top five in the IWLCA poll with its 12-9 victory over No. 4 Stanford. The season also saw the program's first-ever First Team All-American with midfielder Brigid Duffy.
Sofield comes to West Point after spending the 2023 season as an assistant coach at Holy Cross. During her lone season in Worcester, she helped the Crusaders reach seven wins for the time since 2017 while also logging four conference wins for the first time since 2018.
"I'm so excited to welcome Charlotte and the whole Sofield family to Army West Point. Charlotte brings National Champion knowledge and energy with her to West Point. Since our very first conversation, I have been beyond impressed with her passion, attention to detail and commitment to being a great coach. I can't wait for our cadet-athletes, our staff and our program to benefit from her expertise. Welcome to the family, Charlotte!" - Noto Family Head Coach Michelle Tumolo.
Sofield joined the staff at Holy Cross after serving as the program director for Ultimate Lacrosse Charlotte, a youth girls' program focused on skill development, competitiveness, and overall lacrosse IQ. She worked directly with coach curriculum and player development, in addition to assisting with tournament logistics. Prior to joining Ultimate Lacrosse, Sofield spent two years as a second-grade teacher at Success Academy Charter School Fort Greene in Brooklyn, N.Y. During that time, she was also the director of the roots program for FLG Lacrosse in Huntington, N.Y.
From 2019-2020, Sofield played professionally in the Women's Professional Lacrosse League (WPLL). She also spent time as an operations assistant and social media intern for the Federation of International Lacrosse in the summer of 2018.
Sofield had a standout playing career as a defender at the University of North Carolina, where she was a four-year letterwinner with the Tar Heels. A two-time team captain, Sofield was named All-ACC in both her junior and senior seasons while tabbing honorable mention All-American honors by ILWomen following her senior campaign. In 79 career games with UNC, she amassed 45 caused turnovers, 49 ground balls, 38 draw controls to go along with 11 goals.
The Tar Heels saw great success during Sofield's career, winning four ACC Championships while reaching the NCAA final four on three occasions including winning the 2016 National Championship. North Carolina posted an overall record of 71-13 during her four years on the team. Sofield graduated in 2019 with a bachelor's degree in history.
