Brandon Newsome joined Army West Point as an assistant coach in July of 2025 and enters his second year on the coaching staff in the 2026-27 season.
In his first season (2025-26) with Army, the Black Knights amassed 11 wins, with six wins coming in non-league play and five coming in Patriot League play.
Army’s six wins outside league play included wins over SUNY Maritime, FDU, Manhattan, Gallaudet, and Binghamton. The slate was highlighted by the team’s 63-60 win over eventual 2026 NCAA Tournament qualifier UMBC.
The team also made program history during non-league play, with the team hosting perennial powerhouse Duke, on November 11, shattering the single-game attendance record with 5,326 fans packing into Christl Arena.
In Patriot League play, the Black Knights’ five wins included a regular season sweep over the Lehigh University Mountain Hawks, the eventual Patriot League Tournament champion and 2026 NCAA Tournament qualifier. Army also added a win at home against Holy Cross and two additional road wins, one against Bucknell and another against Loyola Maryland.
Under his direction, junior guard Ryan Curry also received postseason honors, earning a spot on the Patriot League All-League Third Team and MWBA All-Met Honorable Mention. Junior forward Tate Laczkowski was also named to the CSC Academic All-District team.
Prior to joining the Army coaching staff, Newsome served as an assistant coach for two seasons with NCAA Division III powerhouse New York University.
NYU’s 2024-25 season was a historic one, with the Violets finishing the season 29-2, winning its first outright University Athletic Association (UAA) title in program history, being named the No. 1 ranked team in Div. III in the NCAA Tournament and making their way to a NCAA Div. III Championship Game appearance.
The Violets played the first two rounds of NCAA Tournament play in York, Pennsylvania, cruising to victory in both matchups before hosting the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 in New York City.
Then, they headed to Fort Wayne, Indiana for the Final Four, defeating Washington University in St. Louis in route to the the program’s second national championship appearance in program history. The Violets went on to fall to Trinity College (Conn.) in the championship game 60-64.
With the historic season, Newsome helped coach many athletes that earned All-American, UAA and NCAA honors.
Tristan How received NABC District IV Player of the Year honors and was also named to the D3hoops.com Region IV First Team. Zay Freeney earned NABC District IV Second Team and D3hoops.com Region IV Third Team honors, alongside Brock Susko.
As for UAA honors, Tristan How was named UAA Player of the Year and received UAA First Team honors. A trio of Violets were named UAA Second Team, Zay Freeney, Hampton Sanders and Brock Susko. Jack Stone also received a UAA Honorable Mention.
To round out the Violets’ honorees for the 2024-25 season Hampton Sanders was named to the NCAA Div. III All-Tournament Team.
In his first season, Newsome helped lead the Violets to a 21-6 record, the University Athletic Association (UAA) Co-Championship (the program’s first title in 30 years), and to the Second Round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.
The Violets hosted the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament, defeating Husson University 82-61 before falling to Tufts University 65-62.
NYU finished seventh in the nation in three-point shooting percentage (39.02) and 19th in assist/turnover ratio (1.43).
Spencer Freedman garnered numerous awards including D3hoops.com National Player of the Year, UAA Player of the Year, National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Third Team All-American, and First Team All-Metropolitan.
Three Violets grabbed All-UAA honors with Freedman a First Team selection and Zay Freeney and Michael Savarino chosen Second Team. Freeney and Savarino were also chosen Third Team All-Metropolitan.
Newsome arrived at NYU with multiple years of Division III coaching experience, serving as an assistant at Wheaton College (MA) from 2021-23. At Wheaton, Newsome oversaw film and scouting operations and in 2022-23 helped guide the Lyons to their first home playoff game since 2009. Newsome also assisted in the development of three all-conference honorees and a pair of 1,000-point scorers at Wheaton.
Prior to Wheaton, Newsome worked as an assistant coach at SUNY Canton from 2019-21. He helped lead the Kangaroos to their first conference championship and NCAA Tournament berth in program history while leading all of the program's out-of-region recruiting efforts. Newsome also helped develop four all-conference selections, a Defensive Player of the Year recipient and conference tournament MVP.
A 2019 graduate of Johnson & Wales University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Sports, Entertainment and Event Management with a concentration in Sports Management, Newsome was a member of the Wildcats men's basketball team that won the Great Northeast Athletic Conference championship in 2018.
A native of Syracuse, New York, Newsome resides in Highland Falls.
