Ben Chase enters his third season on the Army West Point women's basketball coaching staff in 2020-21.
In his first two seasons on the staff, two separate Black Knights have received All-Patriot League recognition in Madison Hovren (2018-19) and Alisa Fallon (2019-20). Hovren was tabbed to the league’s first team 19.1 points per game and 13.1 rebounds per contest. Her 13.1 rebounds ranked fifth in the nation. Fallon was tabbed to the third after averaging 12.1 points per contest in her sophomore year. She was one of just three underclassmen to earn all-league nods. Additionally, in 2019-20 Hope Brown was named to the league’s all-freshman team.
Head coach Dave Magarity announced the addition of Chase to his coaching staff in June 2018.
“Ben is an outstanding addition to our staff,” Magarity said. “He brings with him a wealth of experience coaching and recruiting both men and women at the Division I level, as well as familiarity with the Patriot League in recent years.”
Chase joined the Black Knights’ staff having familiarity of the Patriot League after spending the last two seasons as an assistant coach at Boston University.
Primarily working with wing guards at Boston U., Chase helped guide the Terriers to a .404 field goal percentage, which was the third-best shooting percentage in the league this past season. The Terriers got off to a solid start to the year, posting their first .500 record in non-conference play since the 2012-13 season.
In his first season with the Terriers, he assisted in a 10-game turnaround, while three players earned All-Patriot League honors. With Chase on the staff, Boston University compiled double-digit league wins for the first time since the 2012-13 season and went into the league tournament as the fifth seed.
Chase returned to Boston University, where he received his Masters of Education with a concentration in Physical Education, Health and Coaching in 2011. During that time, he also was a graduate student manager for the Boston University’s men's basketball team after spending the previous five seasons at Houston Baptist. His time at Houston Baptist started when he took on the role of Director of Basketball Operations for the men's team in 2011 before moving over to the women's squad as an assistant coach in 2013.
While on the coaching staff at Houston Baptist, Chase was the top assistant and international recruiting coordinator, successfully bringing in student-athletes from Germany, Australia, Uzbekistan, Austria and Ireland. He was also responsible for the team's defensive strategy and developed scouting reports on opponent offenses.
Chase completed his bachelor's degree at Emerson College in 2008, graduating Magna Cum Laude with a degree in marketing and video production while also playing all four years on the varsity men's basketball team.
While at Emerson, Chase was a three-year captain and led the team to a 24-5 record as a senior, where he was the team’s top scorer and was an Academic All-American.
