Army West Point head men's soccer coach, Russell Payne, announced the addition of former University of Maryland goalkeeper Cody Niedermeier to the staff in March 2017.
Niedermeier will be assisting the Black Knights in all aspects of the men's soccer program, including goalkeeper training, opponent scouting, video editing, individual player development, and day-to-day operations.
"Cody has been part of tremendous winning cultures throughout his youth soccer and collegiate soccer career," Payne said "He was a major contributor in Maryland's Big Ten championships and NCAA College Cup runs and understands the value, first hand, of positive leadership, hard work, selflessness, and attention to detail. We are excited about the energy, passion, knowledge and enthusiasm he will bring to the Army West Point soccer family as we continue our pursuit of excellence in all areas."
Niedermeier comes to West Point after a successful playing career at Maryland. A team captain his senior year, Niedermeier was named a NSCAA Second Team Scholar All-American, while also being tabbed the 2016 Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year. He closed out his career a two-time Big Ten Sportsmanship Award recipient and a three-time Peter Lowry Award winner, which is presented to the team member who exemplifies academic excellence, leadership and distinguished citizenship on campus.
He also earned First Team All-Big Ten and Big Ten All-Tournament Team nods after leading Maryland to its fifth-straight conference tournament title. Niedermeier posted a career-high eight saves last season in a shutout at then-No. 22 ranked West Virginia. He also recorded five saves in a 3-2 victory over Wisconsin to clinch the Big Ten title on Oct. 14. The Arnold, Md., native helped Maryland match a school-record five consecutive shutouts, while registering seven saves against Wisconsin in the Big Ten title game on Nov. 13.
Niedermeier started all 21 games in 2016 for the Terrapins, notching an overall record of 18-1-2 with six shutouts. In 2015 as Maryland's starting keeper, he registered a 0.80 goals against average with 61 saves and finished the season with a mark of 11-4-6 to go along with his nine shutouts.
During his tenure at Maryland, Niedermeier was part of the team's 2012 and 2013 NCAA Final Four runs and 2013 National Championship Runner-Up finish.
Niedermeier has also been highly involved in Maryland's men's soccer camp serving as a camp counselor and team coach. There he assisted in the organization of logistics, directed campers to and from fields and reinforced the camp rules and regulations. Niedermeier also created and implemented a training program for campers of different abilities.
In his youth soccer career, he was a U.S. Soccer Youth National Team Goalkeeper and was a member of DC United's Youth National Championship team.
Niedermeier earned his bachelor's degree in marketing from Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business in December 2016.
