JD Reive is in his third season at the helm of Army gymnastics after being named the seventh head coach in program history in April 2023.
Reive led the Black Knights to unprecedented success in his second season at West Point, as the team won the ECAC Championships for the first time in nine seasons before placing in the top-ten at the NCAA Championships for the first time in program history, topping Navy at each meet. The Black Knights saw seven garner USA Gymnastics All-American recognition with top-six individual finishes, featuring Jaden Blank, Joseph Buselmeier, Noah Duran, Conor Heary, Nick Lester, Maddox Pabellon and Max Rubin.
Reive brings Division I head coaching experience , having served as the head coach for the University of Iowa Hawkeyes for 10 seasons from 2010-2021. In 2018, he was named Collegiate Gymnastics Association Head Coach of the Year for his work with the Iowa program leading the Hawkeyes to the Big-Ten Regular Season Championship that same season.

Reive took control of the Hawkeyes overseeing a cultural and performance overhaul for the program over the next decade. In addition to increased success on the mats which included a trip to the NCAA Championships in every season under his watch, Reive also served on the Big Ten Coaches Chair and hosted multiple Big Ten Conference Championships in Iowa City. In 2021, he led the Hawkeyes to a third-place finish at the Big Ten Championships, the program's best finish since 2006. Four Hawkeyes earned All-Big Ten honors, including a first-team nod from Bennet Huang after finishing fourth in the all-around. Iowa crowed two All-Americans – Huang and Evan Davis – at the NCAA Championships.
In the 2019 season, Reive guided the Hawkeyes to their first Big Ten regular season title since 1998. Reive and his staff were named Central Region Staff of the Year after upset victories over No. 3 Michigan, No. 7 Nebraska, and No. 5 Penn State. The year prior, the Hawkeyes garnered three top-15 finishes at the 2018 NCAA Championships. Reive led the Hawkeyes to a sixth place-finish at NCAAs in 2015, which saw Iowa tab an All-American for the third consecutive year. In 2014, Iowa achieved its highest team score in program history of 437.250, which included a 75.350 team score on rings. Reive also coached the Hawkeyes to three All-American honors in 2013, marking the first time in over eight seasons that the program garnered three All-Americans.
Reive has served on the USA Gymnastics Selection Committee for numerous years, overseeing events such as the 2018-21 World Championships, 2020 Olympic Games, 2019 Pan American Games, 2019 Junior World Championships and the 2019 World University Games.
Most recently, he served as the general manager of 5280 Gymnastics, managing all aspects of a two-facility gymnastics business with over 800 gymnastics competing at a robust level in his program. Reive was also the founder/manager of the JDR Gymnastics Club, which developed and trained gymnasts for both Junior Olympic competition and USAG Junior National Team competition from 2004-2010.
He served as the secretary/treasurer for the Collegiate Gymnastics Association from 2011-2021, managing membership logistics and digital assets while collaborating on the organization's restructuring. In 2010, he founded Eyas Gymnastics LLC, a private club program within the Iowa varsity facility. With Eyas, he established a comprehensive pipeline of boy's gymnastics at Iowa while developing enhanced community visibility of men's gymnastics in the area.
Prior to his stint in Iowa City, Reive served as an assistant coach at men's gymnastics powerhouse Stanford for seven seasons from 2003-2010. Reive helped the Cardinal to four top-three team finishes at the NCAA Championships, including the 2009 NCAA national championship.
In 2008, Reive assisted the Cardinal to a second-place finish at the NCAA Championships, with eight gymnasts earning All-American honors. The year prior, Reive helped guide the team to its second-straight third place finish at the NCAA Championships, where five Stanford gymnasts were named All-Americans and two were crowned individual national champions. In 2006, Reive was named the NCAA West Regional Assistant Coach of the Year and aided the Cardinal to a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships with eleven gymnasts earning All-American honors.
During his time at Stanford, Reive coached 44 student-athletes overall to all-American honors. Reive was also honored as the Collegiate Gymnastics Association Assistant Coach of the Year three times (2006, 2009 and 2010) and was also the National Assistant Coach of the Year in 2009.

Reive was a competitive member of numerous U.S. National Teams as well. He began his competitive gymnastics career at age five and gained a spot on the Junior National Team at age 10. His international career began at age 11, as he won the 1988 Junior Pan American Games. He was invited to move to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs at age 15 and finished second at the 1993 Winter Cup, earning a spot on the U.S. Men's Senior National Team.
A 2000 graduate of the University of Nebraska, JD holds a Bachelor's Degree in Journalism and Mass Communications. He and his wife Donielle have two sons, Dante and Silas .
