Army West Point head baseball coach Jim Foster announced the hiring of Kenny Fleming as the team's volunteer assistant coach in Aug. 2017.
Fleming comes from a very athletic family as his father Steve was drafted out of high school and played for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He then became a college coach before shifting to the professional ranks as a Major League scout. Fleming's mother Kim and her twin sister Karen were both All-American swimmers at Alabama and have since been inducted in the Crimson Tide's Hall of Fame.
Both of Fleming's brothers joined him in the baseball world. His oldest brother Kyle played at Army from 2005-09 and was on the Black Knights' team that advanced to the Austin Regional in 2009. He now currently works in the Toronto Blue Jays organization.
Fleming's younger brother Kurt was drafted in 2010 in the 8th round of the MLB Draft right out of high school by the Atlanta Braves. After Kurt was finished playing professional baseball, he became a member of the Clemson football team in 2014.
Fleming has his own story though. He started as a true freshman at center and left field for Texas Tech in 2009 before transferring to Shelton State Community College for the 2010 season. While there, he earned all-conference and all-region honors.
He was then drafted in 2010, the same year as his brother, in the 30th round by the Atlanta Braves. Fleming then spent the next three years in the Braves organization playing alongside his brother.
After professional baseball, he went back to finish his undergraduate degree at Averett University. While there, he played football from 2013-14, recording 29 tackles during his tenure.
After graduation in 2015, Fleming stayed at Averett and joined the baseball staff as a graduate assistant, where he worked for the last three seasons. While with the Cougars, his responsibilities included recruiting, hitting and outfielders, base running, team budget and equipment procurement.
During his time in Danville, Va., Fleming also worked as a camp coach at Virginia, Navy, Richmond and Shelton State.
Originally from Louisa, Va., Fleming was a four sport athlete at Louisa County High School. During his senior season he earned all-state honors after hitting .527 for the year.
Fleming earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Averett in 2015 before getting his masters from there two years later.
