Army West Point head baseball coach Jim Foster added a familiar face to his coaching staff in July 2017 with the addition of John Murphy.
Murphy joins the Black Knights after a two-year stint as the volunteer assistant at Boston College from 2015-17. He and Foster spent the 2015-16 season together on the Eagles coaching staff before Foster left to head Army’s program. While with the Eagles, Murphy’s duties were working with infielders and hitters as well as handling video analysis.
He helped BC to their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2009, first ACC Championship appearance since 2010 and first-ever appearance in the Super Regionals after the Eagles swept the Oxford Regional in 2016. The team also tied for the second-most wins in school history and the fourth-best fielding percentage during that season.
Before stepping into the coaching ranks, Murphy spent two years in the New York Yankees farm system after being drafted in the sixth round of the 2013 Major League Baseball First-Year Players Draft.
As the highest draft pick in Sacred Heart history, Murphy played two years in the New York-Penn League and the South Atlantic League.
In college, the Seymour, Conn., native was the starting shortstop for the 2011 and 2012 Northeast Conference Champion Sacred Heart Pioneers. He was named to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-America Third Team and the ABCA All-Northeast Region First Team during his senior season. He earned All-NEC First-Team honors as a senior and second-team honors as a junior.
Murphy also took home All-NEC Tournament Team accolades in 2012, going 5-for-10 with four RBI, including a 3-for-3 performance in the championship game. In his sophomore season, he was named NEC Tournament MVP, going 5-for-13 with a home run, four runs and five RBI. He led Sacred Heart as a senior with a .367 batting average, 76 hits, 13 doubles, eight triples and 47 RBIs.
He graduated holding two of Sacred Heart’s career records for triples (17) and RBIs (170), while also finishing second all-time in batting average (.341) and hits (264).
In 2012 during summer league ball, he batted .308 and collected Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star honors while playing for the Bourne Braves.
Murphy earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Sacred Heart. His family includes his mother, Anne, sister, Shannon, and his late father, Kevin, who lost his courageous battle with cancer.
