ARMY WEST POINT CHEERLEADING OVERVIEW
Mission of the United States Military Academy
To educate, train, and inspire the Corps of Cadets so that each graduate is a commissioned leader of character committed to the values of Duty, Honor, Country and prepared for a career of professional excellence and service to the Nation as an officer in the United States Army.
Mission
To provide an extraordinary Division I athletic experience that develops leaders of character committed to the values of Duty, Honor, Country.
Objective
Provide a unique experience for the Corps by generating crowd enthusiasm and actively engaging with our fans. As future leaders, our program promotes the values of Duty, Honor, Country by embodying the ideals of the United States Military Academy.
Squad Description
Army West Point Cheer team functions as a Corps squad team and as such is governed by ODIA and is under the direct supervision of its head coach. The team is comprised of approximately 20-35 cadet-athletes, but it may vary from year to year. Co-ed couples and All-girl groups will have combined practices/work-outs that will allow them to work together when needed, but also develop distinct skills needed for each specialty.
OVERALL REQUIREMENTS & EXPECTATIONS
- Demonstrate exceptional academic leadership committed to academic excellence
- Cadet-athletes are required to maintain a CQPA of 2.0
- Abide by accordance to the cadet honor code, USMA regulations, ODIA policies and team guidelines
- Cadet-athletes are highly visible and must conduct themselves accordingly at all times
- Cadet-athletes must poses a positive reflection of the United States Military Academy and must align with the three pillars of the academy Duty, Honor, Country
- Cadet-athletes need to have a positive attitude and be willing to learn, accept instructive criticism, and respect all decisions of the coach and respect the integrity of the mission of our program
- Cadet-athletes must possess excellent time management and prioritizing skills
SEASON REQUIRMENTS & TIME COMMITMENTS
The cheer program is a full school-year commitment, starting in August and ending in April. The cheerleaders spend eight to ten hours per week practicing.
- Practices/Strength and Conditioning:
- Exact practices and strength and conditioning days/times will be announced during PIAD, but cadet-athletes are expected to practice 3 days a week and lift twice a week.
- Study Hall:
- Incoming Plebs are expected to attend mandatory study hall.
- Returners with a CQPA under 2.0 are expected to attend one mandatory study hall a week.
- Home Games:
- Cheerleaders attend all home football games, men's and women's basketball games, and other select athletic contests upon requests such as volleyball, rugby, and hockey.
- All cheerleaders must be available for all games that might be scheduled over Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring Break, and other holidays.
- Away Games:
- Squad member's will travel to away football games, bowl games, basketball tournaments, post-season basketball play, appearances, as well as other USMA affiliated events as needed.
- The number of travel opportunities available is limited to 12 cadet-athletes.
- Cadet-athletes are required to have a CQPA of 2.0 or higher in order to travel.
- Community Events:
- In addition to practices, games, and study halls spirit members will attend and perform at pep rallies, tailgates, media events, community events, etc. Being in the public and being the face of the academy is a role that we honor and it requires the cheerleaders to be approachable, personable, and mature.
COMPETITION
Our first priority is promoting Army West Point Intercollegiate Athletics and representing the academy as a whole. First and foremost we are game day cheerleaders! However, with the right amount of discipline, hard work, and determination we believe that game day cheerleaders can also compete and win at the highest level possible.
- Our program is primarily a co-ed team, whether we compete large or small co-ed it may vary from year to year.
