Baseball Drops Friday Contest at VCU in Extras
March 06, 2026 | Baseball
RICHMOND, Va. – Army West Point baseball fell 4-3 to the VCU Rams on Friday afternoon in Richmond, giving up a walkoff single in the bottom of the 10th inning.
The Black Knights (5-5) left 14 runners on base in the loss at The Ballpark, tying the game in the seventh inning before suffering the setback in extras.
Robbie Penswick took the decision for Army, despite 3.1 effective innings in relief in which he struck out three batters and gave up just two hits.
Mark Abell provided two outs out of the bullpen after taking over for starter Andrew Berg in the sixth, who went 5.2 innings and struck out five.
Berg provided a pair of perfect innings for Army in his fourth start of the season. VCU however would tag him with a run in the second and a two-out, two-RBI single in the fourth.
Army struck first Friday afternoon with a pair of runs in the second. Zac Farrell was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded before Thomas Schreck worked a four-pitch walk on the next at-bat to drive in another run.
Farrell once again accounted for an Army run in the seventh inning. With two outs, the senior put the ball in play and induced a fielding error by the second baseman, beating the throw out and allowing Carter Hewitt to cross the plate.
Needing scoreless frames down the stretch to force extra innings, Penswick stranded runners on base in the bottom of the seventh and the eighth, and retired the Rams in order in the ninth.
By the Numbers
13: Army drew 13 free passes in Friday's game, including eight HBPs. Hewitt, Farrell and John McKillop each were hit twice. Schreck meanwhile walked twice.
2-for-3: McKillop was 2-for-3 Friday.
Black Knight Notes
Farrell made just his second career start at center field Friday, his first of the year and his first since April 23 at UConn a season ago.
Schreck reached the 50 career walks drawn milestone in Friday's game.
The game was Army's ninth in the Chris Tracz era to go into extra innings, and the first in 2026. Army is now 6-3 in extra innings games over that stretch.

Army and VCU will continue the series tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. from The Diamond. ESPN+ will stream the game.
