Men’s Basketball Falls in Road Contest in the Nation’s Capitol at American

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Army West Point men's basketball (10-17, 4-10) fell in a road matchup on Valentine's Day, falling to the American University Eagles (14-13, 7-7), 63-75.
The loss marks Army's fourth straight dropped game, and the Black Knights' second loss to the Eagles this season, allowing American to sweep the season series.
Four Black Knights finished in double figures, with Jaxson Bell leading the way with 13 points on 3-of-8 shooting, including 1 of 2 from 3-point range. Bell also added three rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Jorn Everson was second in scoring, finishing with 12 points while collecting three rebounds and two steals in 22 minutes. Jackson Furman also added 12 points off the bench and contributed five rebounds, a team-high five assists and one block.
Jacen Holloway rounded out the group, totaling 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting, adding two rebounds and two assists.
How It Happened
Army came out sharp and built an early cushion in the opening minutes. Kevin McCarthy scored on a putback to give the Black Knights a 2-0 lead, and Jorn Everson followed with a 3-pointer off a Ryan Curry assist to make it 5-0.
After a defensive stop and a steal by Curry, Everson connected again from beyond the arc, capping an 8-0 run and giving Army an 8-0 advantage with 17:38 remaining in the half.
American answered with a layup to cut the deficit to 8-2, and later trimmed it to 8-4 on a jumper by Madden Collins. Army responded when Tate Laczkowski finished inside off another Curry assist to push the lead to 10-4 at the 15:08 mark.
The Eagles hit a 3-pointer to make it 10-7, but Eli Joshua split a pair of free throws to extend the lead to 11-7. Jackson Furman then buried a 3-pointer to give Army a 14-9 edge with 11:04 left.
American quickly shifted the momentum. A jumper cut it to 14-11, and a 3-pointer by Wyatt Nausadis tied the game at 14 with 10:07 remaining. Collins scored inside to give American its first lead at 16-14, and a 3-pointer pushed the margin to 19-14. A free throw made it 20-14, completing a 6-0 spurt.
Army briefly stopped the run when Everson converted a putback to cut the deficit to 20-16. However, American responded with a 3-pointer and transition opportunities to extend the lead to 25-16. After another free throw, the Eagles capped a 12-2 run to take a 26-16 advantage with 6:35 left in the half.
The Black Knights answered from long range. Curry knocked down a 3-pointer to make it 28-19, and Furman followed with another three to cut the deficit to 28-22 at the 5:03 mark. Jaxson Bell added two free throws to trim the margin to 28-24.
American regained control late in the half. A 3-pointer stretched the lead to 31-24, and a layup plus free throw extended it to 34-24 with just over three minutes remaining.
Jacen Holloway scored inside to make it 34-27 with 2:23 left, but Collins hit a jumper in the closing seconds to send Army into halftime trailing 36-27.
Trailing 36-27 at the break, Army wasted little time cutting into the lead. Kevin McCarthy knocked down a 3-pointer at the 19:08 mark off an assist from Tate Laczowski to make it 36-30. Moments later, Laczowski blocked a shot on one end and finished a layup on the other to pull the Black Knights within 36-32.
After American extended its lead to 38-32, following a defensive stop, the Black Knights pushed in transition, and Jorn Everson rose for a powerful dunk at 16:10 to cut the deficit to 40-36. The play capped a quick Army surge and shifted the momentum midway through the half.
American responded with a 4-0 run to stretch the lead to 44-36 and later built the margin to 46-36. Jalen Holloway split a pair of free throws to make it 46-37, but turnovers allowed American to extend the advantage to 51-37 on a 3-pointer by Madden Collins.
Holloway stopped the run with a layup to trim the deficit to 51-39, though American pushed ahead 56-39 after a 3-pointer by Julen Iturbe. Army continued to chip away. Holloway scored inside to make it 56-41, and Jackson Furman connected from beyond the arc to cut the lead to 58-44 with 8:22 remaining.
Holloway added another layup to make it 58-46, and Jaxson Bell hit two free throws to bring Army within 60-48. Joshua Eli split a pair at the line to make it 60-49 with 5:33 to play.
Bell provided another spark, converting a three-point play to cut the deficit to 63-52. Army later pulled within 67-58 after Furman buried a 3-pointer at the 2:44 mark, forcing a timeout and keeping the pressure on.
American sealed the game at the free-throw line in the final minutes, extending the lead to 75-63. McCarthy knocked down two free throws late, and Bell added a 3-pointer in the closing seconds, but Army ultimately fell 75-63.
