Kya Smith Named Patriot League Player of the Week
January 05, 2026 | Women's Basketball
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After a historical week, Kya Smith was named the Patriot League Women's Basketball Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday afternoon.
Smith, a junior from Lubbock, Texas, had one of the best individual performances in program history in Army's thrilling 64-56 victory over Howard last Monday at Christl Arena. Smith recorded career-highs in points (27), rebounds (22) and made free-throws (15-15). It marks just the fifth time in program history that an Army player has had a 20-point, 20-rebound game and the first since Jan. 25, 2020, when Lindsay Scamman had 21 points and 22 rebounds against Navy. She joins Megan Nestor of North Texas as the only other player in the NCAA this season with 27-plus points and 22-plus rebounds in a game.
She is the second Army player since 2009-10 to record 27-plus points and 22 rebounds in a game, joining Madison Hovren, who accomplished the feat twice. Hovren and Smith are the only Patriot League players to post those numbers in a game since 2009-10. Smith's 22 rebounds are tied for second most in a game in program history.
Smith followed her strong showing on Wednesday in the Black Knights conference opener, posting an 18-point, 13-rebound double-double – her sixth of the season. Smith went 8-13 from the field, while also dishing out a career-high six assists. In Army's 32-point win over Colgate on Saturday, Smith added nine points, seven rebounds and three steals.
On the season, Smith leads the team in points (15.8), rebounds (10.8), shooting percentage (.593) and steals (24).
The Black Knights – who have a 10-3 (1-1) record – are back in action on Wednesday in Baltimore, as they take on Loyola Maryland. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
