Women’s Basketball Uses Strong Defense to Defeat Lehigh

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Army West Point women's basketball team played ferocious defense for 40 minutes, as it bounced back from its loss on Saturday to defeat Lehigh 64-55 on Wednesday night in Stabler Arena.
Army (16-4, 7-2) snapped its seven-game losing streak to Lehigh (10-9, 6-3) thanks to strong defensive play that forced the Mountain Hawks into 23 turnovers. The Black Knights also got massive performances from Camryn Tade (23 points) and Kya Smith (17 points and 16 rebounds).
The Black Knights have yet to drop back-to-back games this season and are beating opponents by an average of 20.5 points.
How it Happened
After a tough shooting performance against Navy on Saturday, Army came out flat offensively and found itself down 9-4 after the opening 4:30. Despite the slow start, the Black Knights settled in and closed the period on a 9-0 run. Tade kicked off the run with a three and pair of free-throws to tie the game at 11-11.
Following a Kya Smith tip-in, Reganne Reardon beat the buzzer with a second chance layup to give Army a 15-11 lead after the first quarter.
The second quarter proved to be the difference in the game, as Army completely dominated all 10 minutes. The Black Knights went on a 6-1 run over the first 2:10 to push their lead to 21-12. Army continued to hum offensively and took a 34-20 lead into halftime.
Army shot 50 percent in the period and outscored Lehigh 19-9 in the period. The Mountain Hawks made just 4-12 shots and went 0-3 from deep. Four Army players scored three-plus points in the quarter, led by Smith's six.
At halftime, Army was shooting 50 percent from the field and 40 percent from three. On the other side, Lehigh shot 39.1 percent and went 1-8 from three.
Army struggled in the third period, getting outscored 18-11, while making just 5-13 attempts. The Mountain Hawks were on fire from the field, making 7-12 shots, including a pair of threes. Army's 14-point halftime lead was now just seven entering the final quarter.
The Black Knights were held scoreless over the opening 6:45 of the quarter and led by just three. Army was able to string together some buckets and after a Reese Ericson three pushed its lead back up eight.
All that was left making its free-throws, and Army did just that to close out the game and seal its 16th victory of the season.

Tade was tied for the game high with 21 points on 5-12 shooting. She was also 9-11 from the charity stripe. Smith recorded her fifth double-double of the season, scoring 17 points and grabbing 16 rebounds.
Army finished the night shooting 21-51 from the field, while Lehigh was 21-47. The Black Knights made 17-21 free throws, while the Mountain Hawks were 10-15.
The Black Knights led the scoring on points off turnovers (26-18) and fast break points (12-10). Army lost the rebounding battle 31-30.
Lehigh turned it over 23 times, while Brooke Wilson added five steals for Army. Tade had four.
