Women’s Basketball Puts Together Second Half Comeback to Defeat Boston U.
January 10, 2026 | Women's Basketball
WEST POINT, N.Y. – With things looking bleak in the third quarter, the Army West Point women's basketball team turned it up a gear late to put together a thrilling, 64-57, comeback victory over Boston U., on Saturday afternoon in Christl Arena.
Army (12-3, 3-1) found itself down 14 to Boston (4-11, 0-4) with under four minutes to go in the third quarter but caught fire from the field over the final quarter and a half to record its biggest come-from-behind victory of the Katie Kuester era.
The Black Knights and Terriers traded baskets to open the game, but Army cooled down from the field and Boston jumped ahead 10-5. Brooke Wilson buried a corner three to make it 10-8 going into the media timeout. The two teams went back and forth for the remainder of the period, and the Terriers held a 16-13 lead after the opening 10 minutes.
The second quarter saw the Army offense struggle heavily against the size of Boston, as the Black Knights scored just nine points in the quarter and shot 2-10 from the field. On the other side of the court, the Terriers went 5-10 from the field and took a comfortable 28-22 lead into halftime. At the break, Army was 7-25 from the field and 3-13 from three. The Black Knights were also being dominated in the paint, as Boston had the edge in rebounds (23-7) and points in the paint (18-4).
Army's 22 first half points are the fewest it has scored in a game this season.
With Army needing to come out fast in the third quarter to put itself back into the game, Boston came out with even more fire and opened the frame on a 10-4 run to take a 38-28 lead. The Terriers continued to dominate in the paint, and with 3:56 left to play in the quarter Boston built up a 42-28 lead and seemed to be on its way to its first Patriot League win of the year.
The Black Knights weren't going to go down without a fight, and thanks to timely scoring from players off the bench and a pair of Reese Ericson threes, Army closed the quarter on a 12-1 run to trail by just three going into the final period of regulation.
After a rough start to the game, Army seemed to be settling in offensively. The Black Knights shot 40 percent from the field in third quarter and looked to carry that momentum into the final period of play, and that's exactly what they did.
Ericson, who started heating up from distance after halftime, took over the opening minutes of the fourth quarter. The senior guard scored eight straight points, including a pair of threes, to turn a three-point deficit into a five-point lead and give all the momentum to the home side. After taking the lead with 6:59 to play, the Black Knights did not trail again.
With Army up 61-54 with just over a minute to play, Kya Smith deliver the dagger by splashing a corner three – her second of the season and fourth of her career – to put Army up 10.
The fourth quarter was a perfect display of shooting for Army, who made 9-11 shots and was 4-4 from beyond the 3-point line. The Black Knights outscored the Terries 24-14 in the frame to secure the first home conference win of the Kuester era.
By the Numbers
It was the Ericson show on Saturday, as the guard finished with a team-high 17 points on 6-11 shooting, including five made threes. She scored 14 of her points in the second half. Camryn Tade followed her career game on Wednesday with a 15-point, five-assist game. Smith also added 15 points and seven rebounds.
Despite the slow offensive start, Army finished the game shooting 43.1 percent from the field and 9-22 from three. Boston was incredibly efficient, shooting 56.4 percent but took 12 fewer shots than the Black Knights. Anete Adler led the way for the Terriers with a game-high 18 points.
Boston dominated the down low game all afternoon, outrebounding the Black Knights 31-18 and outscoring them 30-18 in the paint.
However, a big key for the Army victory was protecting the basketball. The Black Knights had a season-low seven turnovers and forced the Terriers into 18 giveaways. On points off turnovers, Army led 23-10.
Quotable – Head Coach Katie Kuester
"Just so proud of our girls. You know, obviously you saw the first two and a half quarters. It was all their momentum, but I really feel a lot of it was what we were doing, you know, just breaking their press really slow. Luckily, we got to get on the horses a little bit more offensively, and that generated transition points. Defensively, I thought we did a much better job on their bigs at the end of the third and fourth quarter. So really proud of our girls."
Kuester on Reese Ericson
"She's a dog. She is. She does it in practice too. So, when she does it in games, I'm not surprised at all, but she just has this knack for understanding the game, the moment, and not being afraid of it either, and just running towards the moment and hitting big shots. She has positive emotion that she gives when she hits those big shots. We just rode off into the into the sunset with it. Really proud of her."
