WEST POINT, N.Y. — Army West Point Men's and Women's Basketball will head to St. Paul, Minn., on November 8 as both programs will take on St. Thomas in doubleheader action at the new Lee & Penny Anderson Arena.
The games on Nov. 8 will mark the first time that both teams will take on the Tommies in program history, as well as serve as the first road tests for both programs in the 2025-26 season.
The matchups will mark the first time any two basketball programs will play in the Lee & Penny Anderson Arena, named after the lead donors for the facility.
Lee Anderson, a Minnesota native and a graduate of the USMA Class of 1961, was an outstanding cadet and men's basketball player. He played an integral role in the paint for Army throughout his career and helped lead the program to its first three appearances in the National Invitational Tournament (NIT).
He achieved the rank of Cadet Sergeant and was commissioned to serve in the Army Corps of Engineers, eventually being assigned to Luke Air Force Base in Phoenix, Arizona. Anderson achieved the rank of Captain before returning to his home state of Minnesota. It was in 1965 that he married his wife, Penny.
Known across the country for his incredible philanthropic support, Anderson is widely considered one of the most philanthropic graduates in West Point history, as well as offering philanthropic support to St. Thomas, including the building of the new Lee & Penny Anderson Arena.
The opening of the Lee & Penny Anderson Arena will be a celebration of Anderson's support of both institutions, as the head men's basketball coaching position at Army West Point is also named in his honor, The Lee Anderson Head Men's Basketball Coach. The Andersons are also the naming donors to both the University of St. Thomas and Army West Point's Anderson Athletic Centers.
Lee and Penny also gave a record-breaking six-million dollar gift to build West Point's rugby stadium, now named the Anderson Rugby Complex.
On the men's basketball side, the Black Knights will be entering their third season under the Lee Anderson Head Men's Basketball Coach, Kevin Kuwik, who currently holds a 27-38 overall record at West Point. The Black Knights finished the 2024-25 season 17-16, featuring 10 Patriot League wins—tied for a program-best—and the program's first postseason tournament win in 55 years with an 83-78 win over Elon in College Basketball Invitational (CBI).
On the women's basketball side, the Black Knights will be starting a new era under first-year head coach Katie Kuester, arriving at West Point after spending 10 seasons on the coaching staff at St. Joseph's University. Last season, the Black Knights finished 25-8 overall with a 14-4 Patriot League record, reaching the Patriot League Championship game and earning their first D-I postseason win in program history in the WNIT against Bryant, 59-58.
Tip-off times for the doubleheader between the Black Knights and Tommies in St. Paul will be announced at a later date.
