Baseball Wins Extra Innings Pitchers’ Dual at Bucknell
April 25, 2025 | Baseball
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Heading into extra innings deadlocked, Army West Point Baseball broke a pitchers' dual turned stalemate in the 10th inning Friday at the Bucknell Bison, plating three runs in the bonus stanza to win the weekend series opener, 4-1.
Both starting pitchers—who entered the contest at first in second in the league in ERA—turned in extremely lengthy outings. Andrew Berg went eight innings for Army, pitching eight innings, striking out five batters and allowing just one run, a fourth inning solo home run. The deliverer of 133 pitches Friday, the junior from Conroe, Texas improved his ERA to a conference-best 2.57.
Berg's counterpart—Bucknell hurler Tyler O'Neill—proved just as endurant on the mound. He delivered 149 total pitches and struck out seven, pitching into the 10th and recording a pair of extra innings outs before surrendering Army's go-ahead runs.
With two outs in the top of the 10th, Chris Barr singled through the right side and Addison Ainsworth drew a walk on a full count to set up William Parker with the bases loaded. After pinch-runner Zac Farrell scored on a wild pitch, Parker knocked an opposite field double down the right field line to bring home both Barr and Ainsworth and give the Black Knights a permanent three-run lead.
Kevin Reavey, who had already pitched a scoreless ninth inning to force extra innings, finished the game in the 10th to earn the win and move to 2-1 on the season, collecting a pair of strikeouts.
For the fifth time in its last six contests, and the 12th time over its last 14, Army scored first, with a Thomas Schreck RBI groundout to plate John McKillop.
The Black Knights improve to 20-20 overall, and 14-9 in conference play. With the win, Army clinches a spot in the 2025 Patriot League Championships.
By the Numbers
2-for-4: Barr went 2-for-4 Friday.
3: Army turned three doubles plays, including one in the ninth inning and another in the 10th. That mark represents a team-high in a game this season.
5: The Black Knights drew five total walks.
Black Knight Notes
The extra innings game was just the second this year for Army after previously playing 11 innings at Air Force February 28. It also represented the first extra inning game in Patriot League play since playing eight innings in a scheduled seven-inning contest at Lehigh March 30, 2024. Friday's game was the longest Patriot League game for Army in terms of innings played since April 3, 2023—a 3-2 win over Navy—and Army's first extra innings win since April 11, 2023 vs. Stony Brook.
Berg's eight inning start was his second appearance of eight innings or longer, after going 8.1 frames at Navy March 15. Friday's contest was also his fifth outing of seven innings or longer as well as his fifth quality start this year.
Army committed no errors in a game for the 14th time in 2025.
