Wrestling Concludes Action at NCAA Championships
March 21, 2025 | Wrestling
PHILADELPHIA – Army West Point Wrestling capped off its 2024-25 season at the NCAA Championships Friday.
Before the team's final wrestler was eliminated from action at the Wells Fargo Center, the Black Knight program accomplished many milestones across the campaign. This year, Army had seven individual tournament titles, including a 149 lb EIWA championship from Trae McDaniel. The Black Knights won the team championship at January's Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga, and Class of 1972 Head Men's Wrestling Coach Kevin Ward guided Army to a 22-10 dual win over Navy, the seventh star dual win in 11 seasons.
Army sent seven wrestlers to the NCAA Championships, the largest delegation since 2021 and tied for second-most in program history. Junior Ethan Berginc made his third trip to the championships and his first at 133 lbs. Sophomore Gunner Filipowicz punched his second career ticket to an NCAA Championship, both at 165 pounds. Meanwhile, junior Charles Farmer (125 lbs), junior McDaniel (149 lbs), senior Dalton Harkins (174 lbs), junior Wolfgang Frable (197 lbs) and freshman Brady Colbert (285) made their debut appearances at an NCAA Championship.
Harkins was the final Black Knight standing Friday, taking a defeat in sudden victory to Pittsburgh's Luca Augustine in cons. Round 3, and one round away from Friday night's blood round.
The firstie won two matches in the arena roughly 30 miles from his hometown of West Chester, Pa., notching an upset in Thursday's first round over No. 8 seed Lenny Pinto of Nebraska, before keeping his career alive in cons. Round 2 with a last-second takedown over Brody Bauman of Purdue to avenge a regular season loss.
At 285 lbs, Colbert also secured an upset win in his opening round bout over No. 11 seed Jimmy Mullen of Virginia Tech, by 8-1 decision.
Farmer and Filipowicz also won matches in the wrestlebacks, with Frable winning a pigtail bout to open Thursday's action.
Army concludes the season with an 8-3 overall dual record and a 5-2 record vs. EIWA opponents.
