WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's basketball team (17-5, 9-3 PL) defeated Loyola Md. (8-15, 2-10 PL) 64-53 on Wednesday evening at Christl Arena.
The Black Knights were led by Fiona Hastick, who scored a game-high 19 points. Trinity Hardy and Camryn Tade followed with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Tade also dished out a team-high four assists and added two steals to contribute to the victory.
Kya Smith anchored the boards with a team-high 12 rebounds while also recording three assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Army won the opening tip and quickly jumped out to an 8-2 lead, sparked by a Reese Ericson three-pointer. Loyola responded with a three of its own, but Hardy knocked down a free throw to maintain Army's lead. The Greyhounds answered with five unanswered points to take their first lead of the game at the 5:00 mark. However, Hardy responded with a three-pointer to put Army back on top. The teams traded baskets in a back-and-forth battle until Hardy converted a layup with 39 seconds left, giving Army a 14-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Neither team scored for the first two minutes of the second quarter until Army broke through with a layup. Loyola quickly answered with a layup and a free throw, but Ericson buried another three-pointer to extend the lead. The Greyhounds stayed within four points with 6:45 remaining, but Army responded with a dominant 20-8 run to close the half, heading into the locker room with a 39-23 advantage.
Loyola opened the second half with four unanswered points, but Army quickly countered with a 6-0 run, pushing its lead to 46-27 at the 6:21 mark. The Greyhounds found a basket midway through the quarter, but both teams struggled to score over the next two and a half minutes as defense took center stage. The teams continued to trade buckets for the remainder of the period, with Army maintaining its lead. Hardy's buzzer-beating jumper closed the third quarter with the Black Knights ahead 54-36.
Army controlled the pace in the fourth quarter, maintaining a comfortable lead while trading baskets with Loyola. The Greyhounds made a late push with an 8-1 run, cutting the deficit to 11, but the Black Knights held firm and secured the 64-53 victory.
