WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's basketball team (9-2, 1-0 PL) opened Patriot League play with a commanding 56-38 victory over Colgate (10-3, 0-1 PL). The Black Knights delivered a stellar fourth-quarter defensive performance, shutting out Colgate entirely to seal the win.
Fiona Hastick and Trinity Hardy led the offensive effort, scoring 13 points each. Hastick also dished out a team-high five assists. On the defensive end, Camryn Tade was a force, tying for the team lead in rebounds with eight and recording four steals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Army set the tone early, winning the tip-off and striking first with a quick layup by Trinity Hardy. The opening quarter featured back-and-forth action, with Fiona Hastick's smooth turnaround jumper keeping Army even at 7-7. Colgate briefly gained momentum with a 5-0 run after Army led 14-11. However, a clutch driving layup from Soliel Montrose at the buzzer tied the game at 16-16.
Colgate came out firing in the second quarter, hitting consecutive three-pointers to take an early lead. Despite struggling offensively, Hardy's aggressive drives kept Army within striking distance. Midway through the period, Camryn Tade's crafty floater cut the deficit to four. Colgate capitalized on turnovers to maintain their composure, heading into halftime with a 32-27 advantage.
Army emerged from the break with renewed energy, immediately cutting into Colgate's lead with Hardy's fast-break layup. The Black Knights locked in defensively, forcing turnovers and converting them into points. Hastick's clutch three-pointer narrowed the gap to just two, and her relentless effort on the fast break gave Army a 39-38 edge. Brooke Wilson anchored the defense, contributing a crucial steal as Army closed the quarter on a 15-6 run, leading 42-38.
The fourth quarter was all Army. The Black Knights delivered a defensive masterclass, holding Colgate scoreless while executing on offense. Smith opened the frame with a hook shot in the paint, followed by a Tade jumper off a turnover. Wilson's second-chance tip-in extended the lead to double digits. Tade's precision at the free-throw line and a key steal capped off the dominant 14-0 run.
With their defense smothering Colgate and their offense firing on all cylinders, the Black Knights secured a decisive victory to make a strong statement in their conference opener.
