2023-24 Track and Field Season Comes to a Close at Olympic Trials
July 01, 2024 | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
EUGENE, Ore. – The 2023-24 Army West Point track and field season came to a close on Friday.
Brian Matthews ran a 50.83 in the semifinals of the 400 hurdles at the Olympic Trials to come in 7th of his heat and 16th overall.
Brooke Stratman came 21st in the javelin competition. She will go down as the best to ever thrown javelin at West Point.
COACHES CORNER
Brooke's collegiate career came to end today and when that happens there is an element of nostalgia attached to it. I know she would have liked it to be a different outcome today but her 21st place overall finish is a significant accomplishment for her and for our program. She is the best javelin woman ever to wear an Army singlet. It is not just her results that we will miss. She committed early on in her career to doing everything she could to reach her potential. The example of excellence that she set was on display every day. Brooke elevated the level of what "good" is for our program. She, along with fellow 2024 classmates Kayley Ragazzini, Barbara Antwi, Aysia Salas and Karly Parcell represent the most accomplished group of throwers that we have ever seen at West Point. As a group they won 7 individual Patriot League titles, 8 Star meet individual titles and set 2 Academy records. I doubt that we will see a class quite like them….ever again.
Brian finished 7th in the third semifinal of 400m intermediate hurdles today and 16th overall. His time of 50.83 was the 2nd fastest time of his life and the 2nd fastest ever run by an Army athlete. He started his career as a walk-on to our program and while there are many great walk-on stories of improvement from beginning to end, I am not sure there is a more astounding rise to the top than this one. It is fair to say that he is the 16th best American right now. A meteoric climb for sure. I don't know how many times Brian has contested the intermediate hurdles but am quite certain that he had the least experience of anyone that qualified to run here this week. He was the last guy into the meet and yet somehow he managed to run faster than 19 of the best guys in the United States. He has been an underdog his entire career and while the collegiate chapter of that career has come to an end the mark that he left on our program will last for a long time to come. He goes out on top.
