COACHES CORNER
When you land at the airport in Portland, Oregon, you are struck by the amount of coverage and attention that track and field garners in this part of the world. Travel 100 miles South to Eugene and there is no question that you are in the epicenter of track and field in the United States. As Omaha is to the men's college baseball world series, and Louisville is to horse racing, so is Eugene, Oregon to track and field in the United States. June 21-30, "Track Town USA" plays host to the US Olympic Trials for the 5th consecutive time and the 8th overall. Qualifying for the US Olympic Track and Field Trials is a significant accomplishment, and the Army West Point track and field program has a total of 4 qualifiers competing over the next two weeks trying to make what many in the track world consider, "The hardest team to make", Team USA. I have said it before that the NCAA meet is the third best track and field meet in the world and that the US Olympic trials are a close 2nd. After selections were announced on Wednesday, June 12, the Army track and field team will have more competitors (4) at the trials than we had the NCAA meet (2). Emily Fink '25, Brooke Stratman '24, Brian Matthews '24 and Luke Griner '24 earned their selection based on their best marks during the spring season. Emily Fink is ranked 22 of 24 accepted entries and will get us started competing in the hammer throw semifinals on June 21 with a 12 woman final on June 23. Brian Matthews (35/35) and Luke Griner (29/36) will compete in the 400 intermediate hurdles and 800 meters respectively. Those two guys get started with a prelim round on the 27th with the top 16 advancing to the semifinals on the 28th. The 8 man final for both of those events is slated for June 30th.. Our program has a storied history of performers at the US Trials. Diana Wills, Dan Browne, Jason Stewart, Gerald Ingalls are program legends that made it to the trials at one time or another with Wills and Browne garnering Olympic team berths post graduation. Olympic team births are on the line at the trials and while our folks are further down the list of potential qualifiers, they are in the arena and competing on a level playing field with some of the best in the world.
