MARIETTA, GA - The Army West Point men's rugby team (5-6-1) faced a tough challenge against the number two seed, Life University, in the first round of the D1A National Championship Playoffs, ultimately falling short with a score of 24-17.
Life University took an early lead of 7-0 off of a try and conversion. However, the Black Knights quickly responded when Jonny Haley scored a penalty kick, putting them on the scoreboard.
Life continued to exert dominance with another try and conversion, extending their lead to 14-3. Despite the pressure, Haley's consecutive penalty kicks narrowed the gap to 14-9 by halftime.
After the break, Haley's continued accuracy brought Army within striking distance at 14-12 with another penalty kick. Benjamin Kemp's try then propelled Army into the lead at 17-14.
However, their lead was short-lived as Life retaliated with a succession of a try, conversion, and penalty kick, reclaiming control and ultimately securing the victory at 24-17, thus ending Army's 2024 15s season.
