April 13, 2024 | Football
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point Football held its annual Spring Game on Friday night at Michie Stadium. Before the game, the team saluted five former football players as honorary captains: Jason Frazier, '03, Joe Gerena, '01, Chad Jenkins, '02, Derick McNally, '01, and Brian Zickefoose, '02.
In traditional fashion, Head Coach Jeff Monken spent time on each team's sideline, taking turns rocking each team's color in support of both teams.
Team Black jumped out to a fast start on the opening drive of the game when returning starting quarterback Bryson Daily connected with Slot Noah Short for a 23-yard touchdown reception to put the Black Team out front, 7-0. The duo connected for two receiving touchdowns a season ago.
On Team Gold's opening drive led by quarterback Dewayne Coleman, the drive would be halted on a sack by DL Jack Bousum.
After the first quarter, Team Black led, 7-0.
Early in the second quarter, Team Gold struck when QB Dewayne Coleman found Slot Back Lloyd Benson III down the seam for a 61-yard touchdown, to knot the game up at 7-7.
On the ensuing drive Team Black powered in another score right before halftime as RB Jake Rendina powered in a one-yard touchdown run. Rendina received three straight carries and plowed forward for four, six, and one yard for the score in Jakobi Buchanan-like fashion.
The Black Team took a 14-7 lead into the locker room.
In the third quarter, Team Black would force a quick three-and-out of the Gold offensive when rising senior Chance Keith sacked quarterback Mitch Bolden.
RB Jarel Dickson broke free for a 57-yard run to set Team Black up with good field position inside the 25-yard line. However, K Trey Gronotte would miss a field goal attempt off the upright.
In the fourth, Team Gold responded with a field goal, made by K Anderson Britton to make it a 14-10 game.
Team Black took over and QB Cale Hellums marched them on a productive drive. Hellums connected with WR Neo Vossschulte for a gain of over 10 yards and Rendina broke off a run of 14 yards. The drive came away with no points as Gronotte's field goal was blocked by DL Dre Miller.
With only a few minutes remaining, Team Gold took over backed by at their own 11-yard line. RB AJ Williams got the drive started, breaking off a 21-yard run before QB Dewayne Coleman connected with TE Will Montesi down the right sideline for an over-the-shoulder catch of 31 yards to set Team Gold up with a scoring opportunity.
With 13 seconds left from the three-yardline, Williams powered through to score the go-ahead touchdown for Team Gold and steal the come-from-behind Spring Game victory 17-14.
