WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point men's rugby team fell in an exhibition against Guelph 11-10 on Senior Day.
Guelph opened the scoring with a penalty kick to go up 3-0 at the 32:23 mark. Eight minutes later, the Black Knights got on the board with a try from Bill Boldt and a conversion from Ciaran Murry to take a 7-3 lead into halftime.
A Guelph try to start the second half made things 8-7 before Murray connected on a penalty kick to give Army the lead again at 10-8.
With nine minutes to play however, the Gryphons took the lead on a penalty kick and that would do it for the game as Army couldn't respond.
The Black Knights will be back in action next week against Mary Washington.
HEAR FROM THE PLAYERS
Jacob Bottarini: " Though it ultimately was a negative result, I think this game helped to develop the finishers and will the motivate the team as a whole moving into the back half of the schedule that sees us playing a lot of competitive games on the road. This match left a lot to be desired but it will have a positive effect and will ultimately help the climb of the team. "
Joey Knight: "We did some things well, but our performance wasn't where it needs to be. We will have a lot to work on this week."
