March 13, 2024 | Baseball
WEST POINT, N.Y. – On a warm and sunny home opener at Doubleday Field, Army West Point Baseball recovered from an early three-run hole Wednesday on its way to a 9-4 win over the UAlbany Great Danes.
In just his second career appearance, freshman RHP Robbie Penswick delivered four masterful frames, allowing just three hits and no runs while striking out five. The native of Plymouth, Mass. earned his first career win as the Black Knights improved to 8-7.
The Great Danes struck first with a three-run double in the top of the second. Patiently, the Black Knights worked their way back into the game with a pair of one-run innings before taking the lead in the sixth.
Justin Lehman got the Black Knights on the board in the fourth with a sacrifice fly, before Derek Berg made it a one-run game an inning later with a solo home run.
Army tied the game in the sixth with a Lehman RBI triple, before Berg walked with the bases loaded later in the inning to give the home team a 4-3 lead.
Up one heading into the eighth, the Black Knights opened the floodgates with a Sam Ruta bases-loaded single and a Braden Golinski bases-clearing double. Coleson Titus added an RBI double in the frame as well.
In relief of Penswick, Trey Ates inhered a 3-0 count and a runner on second base with nobody out in the seventh. The Texas native recorded three straight strikes before retiring the rest of the side in order to preserve the lead. In total, he delivered two scoreless innings before Joel Rubin finished the game in the ninth.
