Gymnastics
Johnathan Pinc '26
Cadet Johnathan Pinc, class of 2026, is a standout scholar athlete, excelling in both the classroom and as a gymnast. As a plebe, he secured first-team all-conference on the vault, and as a sophomore, he continues to impress, recently earning a team-high score on the event during a tri-meet against Nebraska and Greenville in February. In addition to his gymnastic achievements, Cadet Pinc excels academically with a 4.233 cumulative GPA, majoring in Chemistry. He is also the recipient of the esteemed Stamps Scholarship, showcasing his commitment to both athletic and academic excellence. Cadet Johnathan Pinc is a standout athlete and scholar, making a mark in both the gym and the classroom.
Beyond his contributions on the vault, the parallel bars, and the high bar, Cadet Pinc's leadership is a steadying presence for the team. According to his coaches, Johnathan is a clutch performer who brings a unique and valuable element to our team dynamics. His support for his teammates both in and out of the gym is unwavering. Johnathan's willingness to serve the team in any capacity to enhance the program and uplift his teammates makes him a true asset.
In the classroom, Johnathan's excellence is difficult to overstate. During the most recent he earned a perfect 4.330 grade point average, earning an A+ in every class he took, including organic chemistry and Chinese. Fittingly, Cadet Pinc was recognized as a Stamps Scholar earlier this month, as one of its 2023 recipients. The Stamps Scholarship is a prestigious award that seeks to allow exemplary students to engage in academically enriching experiences. With his award, Johnathan hopes to use this opportunity to partake in West Point's Academic Individual Advanced Development program at the University of Padova in Padua, Italy to study in silico molecular modeling. This effort reflects his interest in studying medicinal chemistry and small-molecule drug discovery.
Cadet Johnathan Pinc has excelled across all pillars of Cadet performance, but his achievements as a scholar athlete have been truly exemplary. He is leading the men's gymnastics program in competition and in the classroom. He is an outstanding representative of the gymnastics program, the Corps of Cadets, and the United States Military Academy as February's Scholar-Athlete of the Month.
Men's Tennis
Michael Rooney '24
Â
CDT Michael Rooney is a senior and a top doubles player on the Army West Point Men's Tennis Team.   Michael is unquestionably the team's leader through example this year. Michael stands alone as our team's emotional leader, just as he has throughout his four years on the team. Moreover, Michael sets the example on and off the court, in all three pillars of the Academy—academic, military, and physical. He has helped establish the professional, cohesive culture on the team, and he has served as a valuable mentor to our younger players. Â
Â
In addition to Michael's athletic achievements and overall contributions to the team, his performance in the academic pillar has simply been incredible. He is a computer science major and will graduate with honors in May. He has maintained a GPA above 4.0 for his entire cadet career; his current cumulative academic GPA is 4.12. In short, Michael has been a model of consistency overall; his cumulative comprehensive GPA—to include military, physical, and academic pillars—is 4.11. Following his sophomore year, Michael was selected to participate in a classified internship at the National Security Agency. Accordingly, due to his academic excellence, Michael was nominated to apply for nine different post-graduate scholarships, to include the Rhodes, Fulbright, Marshall, and Knight-Hennessey.Â
CDT Rooney likewise is a critical military leader within the Corps. Michael's cumulative military score is 3.55, which illustrates his consistently effective performance as a developing military leader. During his cadet career the notable positions in which he has served include Battalion S6, Company Academic Sergeant, and Military Development Officer. He also graduated from the Air Assault course. He recently learned that he will serve in the Cyber branch after graduation.Â
Â
In conclusion, Michael's performance across all pillars speak to his consistently excellent performance throughout his four years at the Academy. He has earned the genuine respect and trust of his peers, teammates, and coaches—and he is poised to leave a lasting impact on the Men's Tennis program.Â
Â
Head Coach Randy Rowley adds, "I had the privilege of recruiting Michael Rooney to play tennis and to be a student athlete at Army West Point. It was obvious from the very beginning of the recruiting process Michael had the potential to be an incredible officer, leading America's sons, and daughters in the United States Army. Michael has been incredible on the court in terms of his play and leadership, and his evolution in both regards is something I have been fortunate enough to watch beginning as early as his Plebe year. Michael brought innate tennis skills and work ethic with him to West Point, but it is his leadership attributes that continue to set him apart from other players, current and past. There is no secret why Michael Rooney plays number one for this program: he provides an example to live by each day and has been inspiring to not just the coaching staff but to his teammates as well. As inspiring as he has been off the court, he has been a model cadet-athlete and an excellent student in the classroom. Michael is organized, conscientious, and respectful of everyone and will always be a role model for this program to look up to for many years to come."
