Women’s Basketball Falls to Cornell in Season Opener

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's basketball team (0-1) dropped its season debut to Cornell (1-0), 60-54.
Sophomore Fiona Hastick led the Black Knights with 19 points, shooting .500 from the field. Senior Trinity Hardy and sophomore Kya Smith each contributed 10 points. Smith was a force on the boards, collecting nine rebounds, just shy of a double-double.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the opening quarter, Army got off to a quick start with Smith winning the tip and connecting with Hastick for an open layup. Cornell responded immediately, tying the score off a driving layup. The teams exchanged the lead until Cornell went on a 6-0 run in the final minutes, pulling ahead 14-9 with just over a minute remaining. A late shooting foul allowed Smith to sink two free throws, closing the quarter at 14-11.
The second quarter began similarly, with Camryn Tade hitting a three-pointer to tie the game at 14-14. Army and Cornell traded leads until the Big Red surged ahead with a seven-point run. Hardy ended the streak with a three-pointer, trimming the deficit to 23-21. Cornell held the lead through halftime, with Army trailing 32-26 at the break.
In the third quarter, Cornell extended its lead to eight points with a second-chance layup. Hastick responded with a three-pointer, but Cornell answered back with five straight points, increasing their advantage to 10. Smith broke the scoring drought with a powerful layup, sparking the Black Knights. Army's defense stepped up, holding Cornell scoreless for five minutes while scoring eight unanswered points to tie the game at 39-39. However, Cornell ended the quarter on a 4-0 run to lead 43-39.
The fourth quarter was tightly contested, with both teams battling for control. Army briefly led 45-43, but Cornell responded with a crucial three-pointer and a four-point run, regaining the lead. Despite Army's efforts, Cornell held on and secured the 60-54 victory.
