WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point rifle team swept both disciplines firing an aggregate 4667, in outshooting Norwich (4361) and John Jay (4295) in its home and season debut Saturday at Tronsrue Marksmanship Center.
Freshman Brenna Green made an auspicious collegiate debut claiming the individual title in aggregate (1170) and smallbore (582 with 31 center shots), along with runner-up honors in air rifle (588 with 42 center shots).
Green nipped Chris Jennings for that honor by a point in the aggregate scoring (1169) and smallbore (both posted a 582) with her 31 center shots the tie breaker.
Senior Briggs Moore grabbed top honors in air rifle posting a 589 with 46 centers.
Army's freshmen turned in a strong performance in their debuts with Addison Antwiler placing third in smallbore (581) and fourth in aggregate scoring where she tied Ashton Arlington with an 1166 composite for third but lost on centers.
Plebe Nichola Bull was fourth in air rifle (587), two off the leader, sixth in aggregate (1158) and seventh in smallbore (571).
Army outpointed its guests with a 2315 smallbore, 2352 air rifle (2352) and 4667 aggregate along with a total of 273 center shots.
Though it was a challenging season opener, head coach Leighton Dempster felt, "Today was a very rough match day for us. We got the win, but we performed well below our standard of excellence, so we will be looking to clean up some things particularly in prone and air rifle for our next match on October 19th.
"It's always good to get a win, but I know the cadets have more skill than they showed today, so discipline and confidence will be key for us moving forward. I am impressed with the plebes; they rose to the occasion and handled the NCAA match pressure very well." - Head Coach Leighton Dempster
