Hockey Earns 1-0 Win in Conference Opener at Holy Cross
October 20, 2024 | Hockey
WORCESTER, MA - Army West Point hockey (1-1-0, 1-0-0 AHA) earned three points on the road with a 1-0 victory against RV Holy Cross (1-3-0, 0-1-0 AHA) on Saturday night to open the conference slate.
Barron Woodring scored the game-winning goal with 5:15 remaining after the team's played to a scoreless deadlock through the opening 54 minutes. Evan Szary had a stellar performance in goal for the Black Knights, making 36 saves to record his second career shutout with both now coming against Holy Cross.
The Crusaders held control during the first frame, outshooting Army 13-6. However, Army's defense and goaltending proved to be the story of the game, refusing to relinquish a goal.
Army's first two power-play chances were unsuccessful as Thomas Gale was strong in net for the Crusaders eventually making 27 stops.
Army took its first and only penalty of the game via a trip with 6:01 remaining. Brent Keefer quickly erased the man disadvantage, drawing a penalty just 13 seconds later to make it four-on-four. Less than a minute later, Sam Groebner found Adam Marshall with an entry pass into the zone, as Marshall beat his man and fired a perfect centering pass to Barron Woodring who put home his second goal in as many games to begin the campaign. The goal gave Army the lead with just over five minutes remaining.
Holy Cross emptied the net with just over two minutes left, but Szary and the Army defense did well to clear the puck down the stretch and seal the narrow 1-0 victory.
The Black Knights have now gone over 95 minutes of ice time this season without conceding an even strength goal in regulation. The win also marked eight straight victories for the Black Knights at the Hart Center dating back to the 2019-20 season.
The two sides will return on Sunday to close out the series, with puck drop set for 5:00 p.m. on NESN and FloHockey.
